13 Smart Cities Achieve Full Project Completion Under Smart Cities Mission

The Smart Cities Mission (SCM), 13 of the 100 smart cities have successfully completed all their planned projects, according to Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, the minister revealed that 48 cities have achieved over 90% completion of their respective projects, while 23 cities have surpassed the 75% completion mark.

These accomplishments come as part of the government’s ambitious initiative to modernize urban infrastructure and improve the quality of life in Indian cities. The Smart Cities Mission, launched in June 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to foster sustainable and citizen-friendly urban developments across the nation. As of November 2024, work orders have been issued for 8,066 projects worth Rs 1,64,669 crore. Impressively, 7,352 of these projects, valued at Rs 1,47,366 crore, have been completed, accounting for 91% of the total. In terms of infrastructure, significant strides have been made. Over 84,000 CCTV surveillance cameras have been installed across the cities, enhancing security. Additionally, 713 kilometers of cycle tracks have been developed, promoting eco-friendly transportation. The SCM has also contributed to the creation of more than 1,740 km of smart roads, improved solid waste management systems, and the establishment of over 9,433 smart classrooms and 41 digital libraries in government schools.

Despite these successes, there are challenges hindering the timely completion of some projects. Delays can be attributed to factors such as legal issues, land acquisition difficulties, clearance delays, and resource availability in smaller cities or hilly regions. As of November 2024, the government has released Rs 47,225 crore for the SCM, with 94% of this amount already utilised. To further accelerate the mission’s implementation, the deadline for completing all projects has been extended until March 31, 2025. This extension offers more time for states and union territories to meet their targets, with continued focus on improving urban infrastructure and incorporating modern technologies into governance. The SCM’s impact on sustainability is becoming increasingly evident. The installation of SCADA systems to monitor water supply, the promotion of digital libraries, and the improvement in solid waste management through RFID-enabled vehicles highlight the commitment to creating more efficient, eco-friendly, and tech-driven cities. These initiatives not only address immediate urban challenges but also pave the way for sustainable growth in the long term.
