Smart Villages Inspired by Smart Cities Model Gaining Support for Rural Development

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently proposed an innovative approach to rural development by advocating for the creation of smart villages on the lines of smart cities. Speaking at the 42nd Convocation of the School of Planning and Architecture, Gadkari highlighted the need to expand the concept of smart development beyond urban areas and into rural India.

In his address, Gadkari emphasized the importance of integrating modern technology and infrastructure into villages, much like the urban areas that are being developed as smart cities. He unveiled his vision for building affordable smart villages, stating that the government is already working on such projects. Gadkari shared a plan for constructing 500-square-foot homes on 1,000-square-foot plots in rural areas, costing only Rs 5 lakh. The ambitious project promises free electricity and water for life to the residents of these villages, ensuring that essential resources are provided without financial burden. The minister’s vision for smart villages goes beyond just infrastructure. He stressed the importance of turning knowledge into wealth, which he sees as essential for driving India’s economy forward. “Educated manpower will play a pivotal role in achieving the Prime Minister’s vision of making India a $5 trillion economy and achieving self-reliance,” he said.

Gadkari also highlighted the importance of not only technical knowledge but also soft skills such as decision-making, human relations, and effective presentation. He emphasized that a good architect, for example, needs a holistic skill set that goes beyond just academic knowledge. Addressing the balance between development and environmental preservation, Gadkari reiterated the need for ecological, economic, and environmental cooperation. He stressed that while development is essential for the country’s progress, it should be achieved without compromising the environment. “We need to protect ecology and the environment, but development should go hand in hand with them,” he said. With this forward-thinking approach, Gadkari’s vision for smart villages seeks to revolutionize rural living standards, empowering communities with sustainable development and modern amenities. By integrating these villages with technological advancements, Gadkari aims to bridge the rural-urban divide and foster growth in every part of the country.
