PM GatiShakti Initiative Evaluates 5 Major Infrastructure Projects for Enhanced Connectivity

Indiaā€™s infrastructure and improving regional connectivity, the Network Planning Group (NPG) under the PM GatiShakti initiative has evaluated five critical infrastructure projects. These projects, spanning various sectors like roads, airports, and metro systems, aim to enhance logistical efficiency and provide substantial socio-economic benefits to the regions they serve.

On February 12, 2025, a meeting was held, chaired by E Srinivas, Joint Secretary at the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), to assess these projects. The evaluation focused on their alignment with the principles of integrated planning outlined in the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (NMP), which seeks to break silos in infrastructure development and create a seamless, multi-modal transport system. The reviewed projects include the Delhi-Panipat-Karnal Namo Bharat Project (RRTS Corridor), Mahabubnagar Economic Corridor, and Phase II development of Maharishi Valmiki International Airport in Ayodhya, among others. The evaluation of these projects comes at a time when India is increasingly focusing on improving its logistical networks to support economic growth. With logistics efficiency directly influencing transportation costs and time, the adoption of a more integrated planning approach is expected to significantly reduce travel times and improve goods and passenger movement across the country.

The PM GatiShakti initiative, launched with the aim of revolutionising India’s infrastructure, focuses on creating synergies between various sectors and ensuring smoother coordination for project implementation. One of the key benefits highlighted by the official statement is the expected boost in socio-economic development. By reducing the costs associated with transportation and improving connectivity, these projects are set to enhance the quality of life for residents while also spurring local economic growth. A human angle emerges from the wider impact of such initiatives on individuals and communities. Take, for example, the residents of areas that are soon to benefit from the Mahabubnagar Economic Corridor, which promises to improve road connectivity and offer better access to markets, education, and healthcare services. With improved transport infrastructure, local businesses will likely see an uptick in customers and suppliers, while the general public can look forward to faster and more reliable transportation options.

The development of the Maharishi Valmiki International Airport in Ayodhya is another noteworthy project under the evaluation. Itā€™s not just a matter of improving air travel; this airport is expected to serve as a major hub for tourism and business activities, especially as the region attracts more visitors due to its historical and religious significance. For the local economy, this could translate into more jobs, better facilities, and increased investments. The PM GatiShakti initiative is already having a measurable impact. The inclusion of projects such as the Delhi-Panipat-Karnal RRTS corridor signals a focus on promoting sustainable and efficient mass transit systems, providing an alternative to private vehicle use and easing congestion on busy highways.

Moreover, the projects reviewed by the NPG align with the broader vision of integrated planning, ensuring that various modes of transport work cohesively. This is in line with PM GatiShakti’s ultimate goal: to create a more connected, efficient, and prosperous India. By enhancing the efficiency of these projects and reducing bottlenecks, the initiative is expected to support the government’s vision for long-term economic growth. As India moves forward with these and other infrastructure initiatives, it is clear that the focus on integrated planning and regional development will continue to drive improvements across the nation, transforming not only transport systems but also the livelihoods of millions of citizens.
