BMC Demolishes Encroachments Clearing 135 Illegal Slum Structures From Malvani Government Land

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), in coordination with the District Collector’s Office, has demolished 135 unauthorised slum structures constructed on government land in the Malvani area of Malad West.

The large-scale demolition drive, conducted earlier this week, targeted two prominent encroached zones — Ali Talao and Chikuwadi. According to civic officials, 127 unauthorised slum units were razed at Ali Talao, while an additional eight structures, including six slum dwellings and two other unauthorised constructions, were cleared in Chikuwadi. The coordinated effort aims to recover valuable government-owned land and prevent future encroachments in one of the city’s most densely populated suburbs. Officials stated that the operation was part of a sustained anti-encroachment initiative intended to restore open public spaces and ensure that government land is not misused for illegal construction. The drive, planned jointly by the BMC’s ward office and the Collector’s department, involved heavy machinery and ground personnel to safely dismantle the unauthorised structures.

A senior civic official explained that such coordinated actions are essential to maintaining land-use discipline in rapidly urbanising areas like Malvani, which have witnessed a surge in informal housing over the past decade. “Encroachments not only strain civic services but also expose residents to unsafe living conditions. Our goal is to balance compassion with the rule of law by reclaiming public land while enabling eligible occupants to seek rehabilitation under government housing schemes,” the official said. The BMC confirmed that similar anti-encroachment measures would continue in phases across Malad, particularly in pockets near mangrove belts, nullahs, and other ecologically sensitive zones. Authorities also emphasised that these operations are being carried out in accordance with legal procedures, ensuring transparency and minimal disruption to the surrounding community.

Urban planning experts note that such exercises, while necessary for enforcing land governance, must be accompanied by inclusive housing solutions to prevent displaced populations from resettling elsewhere illegally. “Sustainable urban management requires not just demolition, but parallel investment in affordable housing and community integration,” an expert in housing policy observed. This recent operation underscores Mumbai’s growing focus on reclaiming public assets while promoting safer, regulated, and equitable urban growth. As the city continues its densification drive, reclaiming government land from illegal encroachments remains crucial to ensuring planned development and protecting the ecological balance along the city’s coastal and suburban stretches.
