Firstly, deliveries of about 4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of steel to the US from Asian suppliers, including Japan and South Korea, which had preferential access to the US market, may be redirected to high-growth markets like India. Both South Korea and Japan are among the top three steel exporters to India, contributing 40-55% of India’s finished and semi-finished steel imports. With these countries seeking alternative markets following the new tariffs, ICRA warns that India could experience increased import pressures, particularly in FY2026, due to existing free trade agreements (FTAs) with South Korea and Japan.

      The report further highlights that such an influx of diverted steel imports could exert downward pressure on domestic steel prices, potentially impacting the earnings of India’s steel industry in the coming years. However, ICRA notes that China, which has a limited presence in the US steel market due to its steel exports already being subject to the 25% tariff, is less likely to contribute to this shift in trade flows.           According to reliable sources within the government, the alignment for the metro rail project has received preliminary approval from the finance department. However, the final decision on the alignment will only be made following a detailed presentation to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Once the CM gives the green light, the project will proceed to the state cabinet for formal approval, which is expected by the end of this month. This rapid pace of decision-making reflects the urgency and priority the government has placed on enhancing the city’s infrastructure.

          The metro’s alignment is expected to start from Kazhakkoottam in the northern part of Thiruvananthapuram, but the government has yet to release the full details of the route. Transport Secretary Biju Prabhakar, who oversees the project, stated that the alignment is currently under review and that the presentation to the CM would take place soon. He added that after receiving approval from the CM, the project would move to the cabinet for final approval, which is anticipated in the near future. The government’s focus on the Thiruvananthapuram Metro is evident in its inclusion in the 2025-26 state budget, where the preliminary works for the project are expected to begin this year. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has been designated as the agency responsible for implementing the metro system in the capital. According to KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera, the government’s mention of the metro project in the budget highlights its importance. The agency is awaiting a prompt decision from the government to proceed with the project.

          Earlier, the state government had approved a Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) and an Alternate Analysis Report (AAR), both crucial documents for securing funding from the Centre. The approval of these reports, along with the finalisation of the alignment, represents a critical step toward the actual implementation of the metro project. KMRL submitted the executive summary of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the state government in February 2024. The DPR originally proposed two alignment options: one via Karyavattom-MG Road-Thampanoor-Killipalam and the other through NH 66, passing through Kazhakkoottam, Akkulam, Enchakkal, and Killipalam. While awaiting final approval, work has already begun on related infrastructure, such as the Sreekaryam flyover, which is being constructed as part of the metro project. This marks the beginning of visible changes in the city’s landscape as preparations for the metro system move forward.

          The Thiruvananthapuram Metro is expected to be a game-changer for the city’s transportation system, offering residents an efficient, eco-friendly alternative to road travel.               This move follows the successful launch of an online registration system for construction workers just a week ago. The online portal has already received over 5 lakh applications, showcasing a strong response from the workforce. With the state now focusing on registering builders and contractors, it hopes to strengthen the system by cross-checking the legitimacy of the certificates that are issued to workers on construction sites. One of the main reasons for this move is to ensure that workers receive the benefits they are entitled to under the BOCW. Workers who have completed 90 days of work on construction sites can claim benefits such as accidental insurance. By registering the builders and contractors, the government plans to create a robust framework that verifies the work certificates issued to these workers.

              According to a senior officer from the state’s labour department, the initiative has been designed to make the entire process more transparent and accountable. “We plan to get developers and contractors registered and cross-verify the certificates issued by them. This will ensure that the workers’ credentials are legitimate, and they can access all the benefits they are entitled to under the BOCW,” the officer explained. In addition to registering builders and contractors, the state has expanded its registration system for construction workers to the taluka (tehsil) level, in response to directives from the central government. The BOCW has set up 366 ‘Taluka Suvidha Kendras’ across Maharashtra, which are designed to help workers complete their registrations at the local level, making the process more accessible.

              These centres are equipped to process up to 150 applications per day, allowing workers to register and verify their credentials conveniently without having to travel long distances to district offices. The state’s goal is to register 40 lakh construction workers under this initiative, providing them with various welfare benefits, including health insurance and accident coverage. The online registration platform, known as the Integrated Welfare Board Computer System (IWBMS), handles the entire process from registration to benefit distribution, offering significant improvements over the previous system, where applications were processed only at district centres. This digital upgrade is expected to expedite the process and make it more efficient.

              However, while the initiative has been welcomed, some workers’ representatives have raised concerns about the 90-day certificate issuance process. They argue that the system needs further streamlining to ensure the certificates are assessed properly and issued promptly. “There should be an online record of the certificates issued to the workers, which would help in maintaining transparency and ensure that they are not lost in paperwork,” said a representative from a workers’ union. For developers and contractors, the new system mandates that all workers on construction sites must be registered to qualify for the welfare schemes available. With 32 different schemes under the BOCW, workers can claim a range of benefits, especially in case of workplace accidents. This new initiative is expected to not only streamline the process of registration but also ensure that workers are better protected, and their entitlements are safeguarded.
