Govt Stays Committed to 300MT Steel Production by 2030

In a reaffirmation of the government’s ambitious steel sector goals, Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, HD Kumaraswamy, on Monday underscored the commitment to achieving a target of 300 million tonnes (MT) of steel production by 2030. This aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, which focuses on self-reliance and boosting domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Kumaraswamy, who visited the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) in Jharkhand, was accompanied by Minister of State Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma and SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited) Chairman Amarendu Prakash. During his visit, the minister reviewed the plant’s advanced 3D mapping and safety protocols. He also highlighted the significant role BSL plays in contributing to the nation’s defence sector, as it produces high-quality DMR (Defence Military Requirements) plates that are vital to India’s defence needs. This is in line with the government’s ongoing focus on strengthening domestic defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The 300MT steel production target, set for 2030, forms a cornerstone of India’s efforts to expand its steel manufacturing capacity and reduce dependence on imports. This ambitious goal is expected to position India as a global leader in steel production, aligning with the country’s broader economic and industrial growth trajectory. The visit to Bokaro Steel highlights the critical role of public-sector plants like SAIL in realising these objectives. By leveraging technology and enhancing production capacity, plants such as BSL are poised to play a pivotal role in not only meeting domestic demand but also fulfilling the needs of strategic sectors like defence and infrastructure.
