Indian Railways Tackles Ticket Touting with AI and Biometric Verification

Ticket touting has long been a significant issue for Indian Railways, especially during peak travel seasons when the demand for train tickets spikes. Despite various efforts in the past to curb the practice, the black market for railway tickets continues to thrive. In a bid to address this ongoing problem, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) is leveraging advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and biometric verification to combat the illegal activity of ticket touting.

According to a senior RPF official, the railway department has initiated a technological overhaul of its ticketing system. The focus is on identifying and curbing fraudulent ticket bookings through the use of AI-driven behavioural analysis. The AI systems will now track and analyse booking patterns in real-time, looking for anomalies that could indicate touting activities. This predictive technology can help detect suspicious transactions and prevent fraud before it occurs. One of the key innovations in this initiative is the introduction of biometric verification for ticket bookings. The new system will link each booking to an individual’s biometric data, such as fingerprints, which will then be used for authentication during ticket inspections. This measure will ensure that each ticket belongs to the rightful owner, reducing the chances of fraudulent activities such as selling tickets on the black market. Additionally, cloud-based systems will enable real-time processing of ticketing data, allowing the authorities to take swift action if any discrepancies are detected.

Alongside AI and biometric verification, dynamic IP monitoring will be employed to prevent multiple bookings from the same IP address or VPN usage—a tactic often used by touts to bypass the system. This will make it much more difficult for ticket touts to exploit the platform and stockpile tickets for illegal resale. To bolster the efforts, the RPF cyber cells have been equipped with state-of-the-art software to tackle touting operations. These units are actively monitoring ticket booking patterns, conducting raids at cybercafes, and targeting ticket counters where touts are known to operate. Collaboration with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has been crucial in identifying and deactivating suspicious accounts, further tightening the net on touts. For those caught engaging in ticket touting, stringent penalties—including imprisonment—are being enforced under the Railways Act.

Surveillance has also been enhanced, with CCTV cameras placed strategically at stations and on train routes, while real-time monitoring of online booking platforms adds an extra layer of security. These advancements in surveillance and fraud detection are designed to protect the interests of genuine passengers, ensuring they have fair access to train tickets without falling victim to black market activities. The RPF’s commitment to combatting ticket touting is part of a broader drive to ensure fairness and transparency in India’s railway system. Officials have stressed that touting undermines public confidence in the railway network, which is crucial for its widespread use. South Western Railway (SWR) officials have highlighted that these new measures, combining AI, biometric verification, and predictive analytics, will not only fight ticket touting but will also improve overall security and passenger experience. Indian Railways is hopeful that these technological innovations will set the foundation for an even more secure, efficient, and transparent railway system, where passengers no longer need to worry about being exploited by touts. With this initiative, the Indian Railways aims to strengthen its reputation and improve the integrity of the ticketing system, making travel safer and more accessible for all.
