Mumbai National Park Restarts Van Rani Toy Train

Visitors to Sanjay Gandhi National Park can once again experience the park’s popular miniature rail journey after authorities restarted the Van Rani toy train, now redesigned with battery-powered engines and upgraded panoramic coaches. The revival of the attraction comes nearly four years after severe storm damage halted services, and reflects a broader shift towards cleaner tourism infrastructure within urban ecological zones.

Park officials relaunched the Van Rani toy train service following a restoration programme costing more than ₹40 crore. The earlier diesel-powered system has been replaced with an electric battery-driven locomotive, reducing emissions and noise within one of India’s busiest protected green spaces located inside a major metropolis. The small-gauge rail route stretches approximately 2.7 kilometres and loops through the park’s landscaped recreation zone known as Krishnagiri Upavan. The area, spread across several square kilometres, is designated for visitor activity while the core forest remains restricted to protect wildlife and biodiversity. Urban planners say the revival reflects how public recreational infrastructure inside dense cities is gradually being redesigned with sustainability in mind. Battery-powered mobility, quieter operations and controlled visitor zones are increasingly seen as essential in balancing conservation with public access.

The upgraded train now runs with modern glass-roofed vistadome-style coaches that offer wide-angle views of the surrounding greenery. Each trip can carry roughly 70 to 80 passengers, significantly improving the experience for families and school groups who form a large share of the park’s footfall. According to officials overseeing the project, the redevelopment involved rebuilding sections of track, upgrading stations and modernising the supporting infrastructure. The work was executed with technical assistance from Rail India Technical and Economic Service, a government engineering consultancy known for rail and infrastructure projects.

The original train service began operating in the early 1970s and quickly became a defining recreational feature of the park. However, operations were suspended in 2021 when infrastructure suffered heavy damage during Cyclone Tauktae, which caused widespread disruption across India’s western coast. Officials say the updated system aligns with sustainable tourism goals. By shifting from diesel to battery traction, the park expects lower operating emissions while also reducing disturbance to animals living within the protected forest.

Often described as one of Asia’s most visited national parks located within city limits, Sanjay Gandhi National Park attracts millions of visitors annually from Mumbai and beyond. Authorities believe the return of the miniature rail ride will strengthen its role as a major urban green escape while generating additional revenue to support park management. The train is expected to run every half hour during designated morning and afternoon slots, with departures activated once a minimum number of passengers board. For a city increasingly focused on climate-sensitive public infrastructure, the comeback of this heritage attraction also signals how legacy urban amenities can be modernised without losing their cultural appeal.
