Mumbai SRA Launches Technology Reforms To Accelerate Slum Redevelopment

Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has unveiled a comprehensive technology-driven reform plan designed to fast-track housing approvals, improve transparency, and strengthen accountability in one of the city’s most complex urban challenges.

With over half of Mumbai’s population living in slums or informal settlements, the success of these reforms holds significance not only for urban planning but also for advancing equitable and sustainable housing across India’s financial capital. According to officials, the SRA has introduced a series of digital innovations including a multilingual website, blockchain-based approval tracking, and integrated online modules accessible to multiple stakeholders such as officers, architects, developers, and the general public. These systems are aimed at minimising bureaucratic delays, ensuring traceable approvals, and rebuilding confidence among citizens and developers in the slum rehabilitation process.

A senior SRA official said that the authority’s new approach seeks to combine administrative efficiency with social inclusion. “Our goal is to create a system that is both transparent and human-centred — one that prioritises the dignity and rights of slum residents while facilitating timely housing delivery,” the official added. Among the most notable initiatives is the plan to map every slum structure in Mumbai by the end of this year. This digital mapping effort, supported by satellite data and automated building-tracking systems, will enable the authority to monitor encroachments, plan resettlement more efficiently, and ensure that redevelopment projects proceed without disputes.

Industry associations welcomed the SRA’s new direction. Representatives from leading developer organisations praised the authority’s use of digital data integration — linking Aadhaar, electricity bills, and voter rolls to streamline eligibility verification — as a “game-changer” that could reduce administrative timelines from months to days. Developers also cited the introduction of time-bound eviction and demolition procedures as a signal of renewed policy commitment. The authority’s adoption of blockchain to secure file approvals and chatbot-assisted grievance redressal has further underscored its focus on accountability and citizen engagement.

Urban planners note that these steps could mark a paradigm shift in how Mumbai addresses housing inequity. “By blending governance reform with digital systems, the SRA is laying the groundwork for inclusive urban transformation,” said an urban policy expert. As Mumbai strives toward a slum-free future, the SRA’s technology-led framework may serve as a blueprint for other Indian cities grappling with informal housing crises — reaffirming that sustainable urban development must begin with secure, dignified shelter for all.
