NCB Signs MoUs for Cement Industry Decarbonisation

The National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB), operating under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has bolstered India’s cement industry by signing two pivotal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) that aim to drive decarbonisation and technological advancements. These strategic partnerships, unveiled during the 18th NCB International Conference and Exhibition on Cement and Concrete at Yashobhoomi, IICC Dwarka, mark a major leap towards achieving sustainability goals in the sector.

The first of the two agreements was inked between NCB and the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) India, focusing on decarbonisation research for India’s cement industry. With the ambitious objective of achieving a “Net Zero” industry by 2070, this collaboration will focus on reducing carbon emissions while maintaining productivity levels within the sector. The move is aligned with India’s broader climate commitments and aims to position the country as a leader in the global transition to sustainable construction practices. The second MoU, signed with AIC-Plasmatech Innovation Foundation, represents a bold step towards the introduction of cutting-edge technologies in cement manufacturing. This agreement will explore the application of Thermal Plasma Torch Technology in cement production processes. By enhancing the sustainability and energy efficiency of cement manufacturing, the technology could significantly lower the carbon footprint of the sector.

If successful, this initiative could reshape how cement is produced in India, aligning with both environmental and industry growth goals. Both MoUs are seen as part of a broader strategy to propel India’s cement industry toward a low-carbon future while simultaneously improving operational efficiencies. These steps signal a commitment to tackling the environmental challenges posed by cement production, which is a major contributor to global CO2 emissions. India’s cement sector, one of the largest in the world, is set to play a pivotal role in the country’s sustainability drive. With these agreements, NCB and its partners are laying the groundwork for innovations that will ensure the sector remains competitive, sustainable, and responsive to global climate change challenges.
