CAQM Conducts Inspections at 7,000 Construction Sites to Tackle Pollution in Delhi

The National Capital Region (NCR), the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has reported that over 7,000 construction and demolition sites were inspected between October 15 and 31. This initiative coincides with the establishment of a GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) monitoring control room aimed at implementing immediate actions under stages I and II of the pollution control measures currently in effect.

The inspections have resulted in significant penalties, with 597 sites being levied environmental compensation and 56 sites ordered to cease operations. These measures reflect a stringent approach to curbing dust pollution at its source. The CAQM has enhanced the deployment of mechanised road sweeping machines (MRSMs), water sprinklers, and anti-smog guns (ASGs) across the NCR. In Delhi alone, an average of 81 MRSMs were operational daily, while Haryana and Uttar Pradesh saw 36 MRSMs deployed each day to mitigate dust emissions from roadways. Additionally, about 600 water sprinklers and ASGs were utilised daily across the NCR to further address airborne particulates. In terms of vehicular emissions, approximately 54,000 vehicles were fined for lacking Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, while nearly 3,900 overaged vehicles were impounded.

The CAQM’s efforts also extended to municipal solid waste management, with more than 5,300 inspections conducted at suspected illegal dumping sites. This comprehensive strategy reflects a multifaceted approach to combatting air quality degradation. The community’s response to these measures has been mixed. Many residents appreciate the increased enforcement and proactive measures. “It’s reassuring to see authorities taking action; we all want cleaner air for our children,” expressed a local resident. However, some are concerned about the practical implications of these actions. “While inspections are necessary, what about the underlying issues of waste management and urban planning?” asked another resident, emphasising the need for long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes. From a sustainability perspective, the CAQM’s initiatives highlight the critical importance of integrated environmental management. The focus on reducing dust pollution and vehicular emissions aligns with broader goals of sustainable urban development. By investing in infrastructure like MRSMs and ASGs, the CAQM is not only aiming to improve air quality but also to enhance the overall livability of the NCR.
