NCB Partners with Global and Local Entities to Propel Decarbonisation in Cement Sector

In a significant move towards advancing sustainability in India’s cement industry, the National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB), under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, has signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at accelerating decarbonisation and fostering technological innovation. These agreements were unveiled during the 18th NCB International Conference and Exhibition on Cement and Concrete, held at Yashobhoomi, IICC Dwarka.

The first MoU was established between NCB and the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) India. The partnership is designed to boost research efforts focused on decarbonising the Indian cement industry, with an ambitious goal of achieving “Net Zero” emissions by 2070. This collaboration signals a focused push towards reducing the carbon footprint of one of India’s most carbon-intensive sectors, which plays a pivotal role in the country’s infrastructure and economic development. The second MoU, signed with the AIC-Plasmatech Innovation Foundation, seeks to explore the potential of Thermal Plasma Torch Technology in cement production. This innovative technology is expected to revolutionise the manufacturing process by improving sustainability and operational efficiency. The application of Thermal Plasma Torch could offer significant reductions in energy consumption and emissions, thereby enhancing the sector’s green credentials.

These MoUs are indicative of the growing recognition of the cement industry’s role in mitigating climate change. The collaborations align with global trends aiming to reduce the carbon intensity of key industrial sectors, especially those contributing heavily to emissions like cement and concrete manufacturing. By fostering partnerships with global and local organisations, the NCB is leading India’s efforts to modernise its cement sector and position it as a pioneer in green technologies. As India continues to expand its infrastructure to support economic growth, the cement industry must adapt to greener, more efficient practices to meet sustainability targets. This move represents a significant milestone in the journey towards decarbonising the cement industry, and with the implementation of these technological innovations, India could take a major step forward in its commitment to climate action.
