88 Lakh Houses Delivered Under PMAY-U; Government Announces PMAY-U 2.0

The Indian government has made significant strides in urban housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) or PMAY-U, with over 88 lakh homes delivered to beneficiaries. According to a written response by Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu in the Rajya Sabha, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has sanctioned a total of 1.18 crore houses as of November 18, 2024, as part of its effort to provide pucca houses in urban areas.

PMAY-U, launched on June 25, 2015, aims to ensure affordable and quality housing for urban poor across India. Under this initiative, the Ministry has been working closely with state and Union Territory governments to facilitate the construction of homes and provide central assistance. As of now, more than 88 lakh houses have been completed and delivered, with the remaining homes still in various stages of construction. The initiative has been crucial in addressing the housing shortage in urban areas, offering a pathway to homeownership for millions of citizens in need. The completed homes are a testament to the government’s commitment to improving urban living conditions and ensuring that low-income families have access to basic housing.

In addition to the successes of PMAY-U, the government has launched a new phase of the scheme—PMAY-U 2.0—on September 1, 2024. This updated mission, titled ‘Housing for All,’ aims to construct, purchase, or rent 10 million houses at affordable costs through four key verticals: Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC), Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP), Affordable Rental Housing (ARH), and the Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS). PMAY-U 2.0 has already gained momentum, with 29 states and Union Territories signing Memorandums of Agreement to implement the new housing initiatives. This expansion of the scheme reflects the government’s continued focus on improving housing accessibility, with a vision of ensuring that every eligible beneficiary has a roof over their head. The progress of PMAY-U highlights the government’s strong commitment to the ‘Housing for All’ mission, and the future of urban housing in India looks promising with the continued support and collaboration between various levels of government.
