Uttarakhand to Build 16,000 Affordable Homes for Low-Income Families Under PM Housing Scheme

The Uttarakhand government is set to construct 16,000 affordable homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PM Housing Scheme). The project is being executed by the Uttarakhand Housing Development Council (UHDC) and the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), with the guidance of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), this housing scheme is aligned with the government’s commitment to the goal of Antyodaya, which seeks to uplift the poorest sections of society by providing them with essential amenities like shelter. Chief Minister Dhami praised the efforts of the Housing Development Authority in Uttarakhand, emphasizing the significant role they’ve played in the success of the initiative. The housing project is a collaborative effort, with 15 ongoing projects by private investors aimed at constructing 12,856 homes. Additionally, development authorities are working on 3,104 more units. As of now, 1,760 houses have been handed over to beneficiaries through private participation, and a total of 14,635 houses have been allotted. The target is to complete all projects by March 2025.

These affordable homes are designed to meet the needs of families with an annual income of less than Rs 3 lakh. The houses will feature two rooms, a kitchen, and a toilet. The total cost for each house is Rs 6 lakh, with Rs 3.5 lakh covered by central and state government schemes. Eligible families can obtain these homes through easy home loans for just Rs 2.5 lakh, while private investors cover all construction costs, including land acquisition. The eligibility criteria specify that only families who have been residents of Uttarakhand before June 15, 2015, and meet the income threshold, will benefit from this initiative. In addition, the MDDA has completed housing units in Transport Nagar (224 flats), Tarla Amwala (240 flats), and plans to complete 240 more flats in Dhaulas by March 2025. The transparency of beneficiary selection was assured by MDDA Vice President Banshidhar Tiwari, who confirmed that all eligible individuals will receive their flats on schedule. This project represents a significant stride towards providing secure and affordable housing for those in need, contributing to the socio-economic growth of the region.
