Amgen Leases 500,000 Sq Ft in Hyderabad for Groundbreaking Global Capability Centre

Biotechnology giant Amgen has taken a significant step towards expanding its global operations by leasing 500,000 sq ft of office space in Hyderabad to establish its first global capability centre (GCC). This move is expected to double the company’s office footprint in the city, underlining Hyderabad’s growing importance as a hub for technology and life sciences.

Amgen India, a subsidiary of California-based Amgen Inc., has chosen the RMZ Nexity and Spire Tower in HITEC City as the location for its technology and innovation centre. The deal marks a significant commitment to enhancing the company’s digital and technological capabilities. The lease is structured in two phases, with the first 250,000 sq ft being occupied initially, while the remaining 250,000 sq ft will be operational by the end of 2025. The lease tenure is nine years, with a five-year lock-in period and a rental cost of ₹90 per square foot. The Hyderabad GCC will focus on advancing technology solutions, with an emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics. These technologies are pivotal in driving Amgen’s digital transformation efforts. The centre will play a key role in developing innovative healthcare solutions, streamlining operations, and accelerating research, further bolstering Amgen’s global footprint in the biotechnology sector. David M Reese, Amgen’s Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, shared his excitement about the centre’s potential. “At a time when a rapidly aging global population demands more innovation, the convergence of biotechnology and technology is enabling Amgen to work with greater speed, confidence, and efficiency—an incredibly exciting milestone for which we have been preparing for over a decade,” Reese said.

Hyderabad has become a prominent destination for global corporations, particularly in the life sciences and technology sectors. The city’s infrastructure, skilled workforce, and favourable business environment have attracted several multinational companies to set up their GCCs. Companies in the pharmaceutical and medtech sectors have been establishing centres in Hyderabad to leverage local talent, especially in technology fields like AI and data analytics, to enhance global operations. These GCCs play a vital role in developing AI-driven tools that optimise manufacturing processes, discover drug targets, and simulate clinical trial scenarios. Amgen’s move to establish a GCC in Hyderabad follows a trend seen among other global biotech and pharmaceutical firms. For instance, Sanofi recently announced an investment of ₹3,600 crore to expand its GCC in the city, while AstraZeneca and Medtronic have made significant investments of ₹250 crore and ₹500 crore, respectively, to set up their own centres. Such investments reflect the growing importance of Hyderabad in the global life sciences ecosystem.

According to industry projections, India’s biotechnology sector is expected to contribute 19% to the global biotech market by 2025, driven by cost efficiency, a flourishing bioeconomy, and the country’s strategic positioning in the global market. The sector is projected to exceed $300 billion by 2030, with Hyderabad at the forefront of this growth. This investment in Hyderabad further consolidates the city’s position as a key player in the global biotechnology and technology sectors. Amgen’s global capability centre is a clear indication of the increasing convergence of biotechnology and technology, and its establishment in Hyderabad highlights the city’s role in driving innovation in healthcare solutions. As global biotech companies continue to expand their operations in India, particularly in cities like Hyderabad, the impact on the local economy and workforce is expected to be significant, with job creation and the fostering of innovation in healthcare at the forefront.
