Bokaro Steel Plant Develops India’s First Agriculture Grade Manganese Boron Steel Innovation

In a major step towards industrial self-reliance and sustainable rural development, Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), has developed a specialised steel grade designed exclusively for agricultural machinery  a first for the company.

The newly engineered 28MnB5 manganese-boron steel promises to revolutionise India’s farm equipment sector by offering greater durability, strength, and cost efficiency.Traditionally recognised for producing high-end steel used in defence, shipbuilding, and infrastructure, BSL’s latest innovation marks a strategic pivot towards agriculture  a sector central to India’s rural economy. The new alloy blends medium carbon with manganese, boron, and chromium, creating a material with exceptional hardness and wear resistance. It is particularly suited for ploughshares, disc harrows, cultivator blades, and other equipment exposed to heavy mechanical stress in farmlands.

An official at the plant said the innovation “strengthens the backbone of rural India” by ensuring that Indian farmers have access to implements built entirely from domestically produced materials. “Our Mn-B steel will make agricultural tools stronger, longer lasting, and fully Made in India,” the official added.Since its development in 2024, the plant has produced and supplied over 60,000 tonnes of the new grade, with projections indicating annual output could reach 80,000 tonnes in the coming year. Industry experts say this shift will help reduce dependence on imported wear-resistant steels while creating new opportunities for domestic equipment manufacturers.

The material’s high tensile strength not only extends the lifespan of farm machinery but also aligns with India’s push for sustainable manufacturing. By replacing imported materials and improving production efficiency, it contributes to the nation’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision promoting industrial growth that supports both urban infrastructure and rural livelihoods.Bokaro’s initiative builds on its history of innovation across strategic sectors. The plant already produces advanced steels for warships (DMR-249A), solar energy systems, and food grain silos. The introduction of agriculture-grade manganese-boron steel broadens this portfolio, signalling SAIL’s long-term commitment to sustainable and inclusive industrial development.

Analysts note that the breakthrough also ties into the circular economy principles increasingly adopted by India’s heavy industries where advanced materials not only enhance performance but also reduce waste and environmental impact across the value chain. As India’s cities and farmlands modernise simultaneously, BSL’s development stands as a reminder that sustainable industrial innovation can drive both productivity and equity  helping build a stronger, self-reliant nation from the ground up.
