Starlink Leases Mumbai Office To Strengthen India Presence And Expand Satellite Broadband Network

Starlink Satellite Communications Pvt Ltd, the Indian arm of SpaceX, has leased a new office in Mumbai to support its planned rollout of satellite broadband services. The development represents a crucial step as the company awaits final clearances from the Department of Telecommunications to begin nationwide operations.

According to registration details, the company has secured a 1,294 sq ft ground-floor office in the Boomerang commercial complex, Chandivali, on a five-year lease. The deal carries a monthly rent of ₹3.52 lakh, an annual escalation of 5%, and a security deposit of ₹31.7 lakh. The location places Starlink in proximity to several key technology and infrastructure firms, reflecting Mumbai’s growing role as a hub for global digital innovation.

Industry observers see the move as part of Starlink’s broader India expansion strategy, which includes plans to establish nine gateway earth stations across major cities to enhance connectivity and bandwidth coverage. Mumbai has been identified as one of these proposed sites, underscoring the city’s strategic importance in the firm’s national network.

Experts suggest that Starlink’s presence could reshape India’s connectivity landscape, particularly in rural and underserved regions where conventional broadband infrastructure remains limited. “Satellite internet has the potential to bridge India’s digital divide, bringing education, telemedicine, and e-governance services to communities beyond the reach of fibre networks,” said an urban technology analyst. The development also aligns with India’s push towards universal internet access and the Digital India mission, which aims to provide affordable broadband to every citizen. With India’s vast geography and increasing data demand, satellite-based communication is expected to complement terrestrial networks and reduce reliance on traditional telecom infrastructure.

Starlink’s Mumbai expansion reflects a global trend of tech-driven urban clustering, where major cities are becoming testbeds for next-generation communication systems. Urban planners believe this trend could foster sustainable digital ecosystems by encouraging shared data centres, efficient energy use, and collaborative innovation hubs. The company’s entry comes amid increasing competition in the satellite broadband segment, with other global and domestic players exploring similar models. Analysts point out that Starlink’s early move into India could help it build strategic partnerships with local governments and enterprises as the regulatory framework evolves. As India gears up for a digital future, the convergence of urban infrastructure, satellite technology, and sustainable connectivity could help cities like Mumbai lead the next phase of inclusive digital growth  ensuring that the benefits of high-speed internet extend from metros to the most remote rural districts.
