Guwahati Grid India NERLDC Office Earns Prestigious Griha Four Star Green Certification

In a major step towards sustainable infrastructure in the North East, the North Eastern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NERLDC) of GRID-INDIA has been awarded the GRIHA Four-Star Green Building Certification for its Guwahati Office-cum-Control Centre.

The certification marks one of the first green-rated control facilities in the region, setting a benchmark for eco-efficient energy infrastructure. The recognition was formally presented to the regional head of NERLDC by the Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in the presence of international dignitaries, including the Ambassador of Norway and senior officials from the International Solar Alliance. The event underscored India’s growing emphasis on integrating sustainability into energy management and operational design.

According to officials, the Guwahati control centre was developed with sustainability parameters embedded across its architecture and operations  including energy-efficient systems, natural lighting optimisation, water conservation mechanisms, and the use of locally sourced construction materials. The building’s design ensures reduced carbon emissions while maintaining optimal thermal comfort and operational efficiency.

Environmental experts view this certification as a key milestone for North East India, where green infrastructure adoption has been slower compared to other regions. “This achievement demonstrates how energy institutions can lead by example in implementing low-carbon principles,” said an environmental design consultant familiar with the project.

The GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) system, developed by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and endorsed by the Government of India, is among the country’s most respected sustainability benchmarks. A four-star rating signifies advanced compliance with green building norms, covering parameters such as site planning, energy and water efficiency, waste management, and occupant well-being.

The certification aligns with GRID-INDIA’s long-term vision of building a resilient and decarbonised power grid that complements India’s renewable energy transition. The organisation has progressively implemented energy-efficient practices across its regional facilities, emphasising green procurement and climate-responsive design.A senior GRID-INDIA representative said the award reflects the company’s “commitment to operational sustainability and environmental stewardship.” The official added that the organisation’s upcoming projects will continue to follow similar frameworks for eco-certification and resource optimisation.

Experts believe the move also supports India’s national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, particularly in the energy and infrastructure sectors that contribute heavily to carbon output. As cities like Guwahati modernise their energy management networks, integrating sustainability into operational hubs will be critical for balancing development with environmental responsibility. With this milestone, GRID-INDIA’s NERLDC Guwahati facility stands as a model for future government and public-sector infrastructure in the region  demonstrating that green design is not just aspirational but achievable in complex operational environments.
