New Delhi Confirms India Will Limit Coal Power While Boosting Renewable Growth

India has confirmed it will cap the expansion of coal-fired power capacity beyond 2035, signalling a major shift in its energy strategy. The government plans to maintain coal capacity at 307 gigawatts while simultaneously accelerating renewable energy development, targeting 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Officials emphasise that future decisions will depend on evolving electricity demand, grid stability, and the integration of clean energy, reflecting India’s effort to balance power security with its climate ambitions.

A senior official from the power ministry explained that the government intends to carefully monitor trends in electricity consumption and renewable integration before making commitments on coal beyond 2035. “Our approach is to secure reliable energy while understanding how clean sources are absorbed by the grid,” the official said. Authorities plan to reassess the landscape every three years, factoring in demand patterns and the rate at which renewable capacity becomes operational.Currently, coal-fired power contributes roughly 75 per cent of India’s electricity output, making it a critical component of the national grid. However, generation has declined in several months this year due to temperate weather reducing cooling demand. Despite this, utilities continue to secure long-term agreements with coal producers to ensure peak-hour supply, particularly in the evenings when solar and wind output may drop.

Experts note that integrating surplus renewable energy remains a technical challenge. Periods of excess clean power have already forced reductions in coal output, highlighting the need for better energy storage solutions. The official added that decisions on additional coal capacity will depend on costs and technological feasibility of storing and dispatching renewable energy efficiently. The government’s approach reflects broader trends in sustainable urban and industrial planning. By limiting coal while scaling renewable sources, India aims to meet growing electricity needs without undermining climate targets. This strategy aligns with the creation of low-carbon, resilient cities where energy infrastructure supports economic growth, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.

Industry observers suggest that investments in smart grids, battery storage, and flexible generation will be critical in harmonising legacy coal infrastructure with renewable expansion. The coming decade will test India’s capacity to manage this energy transition while maintaining reliable supply for urban centres, industrial hubs, and rural communities alike. With measured planning and technological innovation, India is signalling a future where coal remains a transitional energy source, and renewables take centre stage in powering a sustainable, equitable, and climate-resilient urban landscape.
