Bengaluru Launches First Driverless Metro Trainset for Pink Blue Lines 2026

BEML Limited has taken a significant stride in Bengaluru’s urban transit landscape with the rollout of the city’s first driverless metro trainset. Designed for the Namma Metro’s upcoming Pink and Blue (Airport) Lines, the indigenous six-coach prototype is slated to begin comprehensive testing from 15 December, targeting operational deployment by June 2026. The milestone represents a key step in enhancing efficiency, safety, and commuter experience in India’s expanding metro network.

The unveiling at BEML’s Bengaluru rail complex was witnessed by senior officials, including the Managing Director of Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and BEML’s Chairman and Managing Director. “The prototype embodies our commitment to advancing India’s metro infrastructure with cutting-edge technology and local manufacturing,” an official from BEML said. Once delivered to the Kothanur depot, the trainset will undergo a rigorous five-month testing and commissioning programme. BEML will also provide full maintenance support for up to 15 years, ensuring operational reliability across the fleet. The six-coach trainset, designed entirely at BEML’s Bengaluru facility, employs Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) systems to operate autonomously while adhering to international safety standards. Key specifications include a passenger capacity of 2,008, a stainless-steel car body measuring 2,762 mm in width and 3,800 mm in height, and a design speed of 90 kmph with operational speeds up to 80 kmph. The trains integrate regenerative and pneumatic braking for energy efficiency and offer ergonomic seating, wide gangways, USB charging points, and modern interiors. Advanced fire and safety compliance further reinforce the system’s robustness.

The new trainsets are integral to Phase 2 of Bengaluru Metro’s expansion. Officials anticipate that the 7.5-km elevated section from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere will be operational by June 2026 with five driverless trains, while the 13.7-km underground corridor from Dairy Circle to Nagawara is expected by December 2026. Once complete, the lines will operate 23 trainsets with peak-hour frequencies of 4.5 minutes, improving connectivity across the city. BEML’s expanded role consolidates its position as the primary rolling stock supplier for Bengaluru Metro, complementing previous deliveries for the Green and Purple Lines. Recent contracts include six driverless trainsets for the Yellow Line and 42 additional cars for the Pink Line, bringing the company’s total supply commitment to 66 trainsets.

Industry experts note that Bengaluru’s driverless metro initiative reflects broader trends in Indian urban transit, where automation, safety, and energy efficiency are increasingly prioritised to meet growing commuter demand and sustainable mobility targets.
