India Mining Push Advances AI Led Mineral Exploration

India’s mining sector is undergoing a technological shift as the Geological Survey of India partners with TEXMiN Foundation to accelerate advanced mineral exploration. The collaboration signals a move towards data-driven mining, aimed at unlocking deeper and previously inaccessible mineral resources critical to infrastructure and industrial growth.

The agreement focuses on integrating artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning into exploration processes—technologies that can significantly improve the identification of mineral-rich zones. These tools will be used for mineral prospectivity mapping and for detecting concealed deposits that traditional exploration methods often miss. At its core, the initiative addresses a longstanding challenge in India’s mining ecosystem: limited exploration depth and delayed discovery cycles. By applying AI-led modelling, the sector aims to reduce uncertainty in resource identification while accelerating the transition from exploration to extraction. This is particularly relevant for critical minerals, which are essential for renewable energy systems, electronics, and advanced manufacturing.The collaboration also includes pilot projects to recover critical minerals from existing exploration blocks and associated deposits. This approach reflects a shift from conventional mining practices to more efficient resource utilisation, including extracting valuable elements from by-products and previously overlooked mineral phases. 

Industry experts note that such initiatives could redefine the economics of mining in India. Faster and more accurate exploration reduces project risk, attracts investment, and shortens the time required to bring new mines into operation. For infrastructure sectors—ranging from construction materials to energy systems—this translates into more reliable supply chains and reduced dependence on imports.Another key aspect of the partnership is the integration of start-ups and research institutions into the mining value chain. By opening the ecosystem to third-party innovation, the initiative aims to build scalable solutions using technologies such as remote sensing, robotics, and geospatial analytics. This reflects a broader shift towards “Mining 4.0”, where digital tools and automation enhance both efficiency and safety.Capacity building is also central to the effort. Training programmes and collaborative research will focus on developing technical expertise in advanced exploration techniques, ensuring that the workforce can adapt to increasingly technology-driven mining operations. From an urban and infrastructure perspective, the implications are significant. Reliable access to minerals underpins everything from cement and steel production to renewable energy deployment.
