Gujarat Umargaon Plant Targets Cleaner Building Materials

A Gujarat-based maker of aerated concrete blocks has started trial manufacturing of construction chemicals at its Umargaon facility, signalling a wider shift in India’s building materials industry towards integrated, lower-waste construction solutions. The move could improve access to ready-to-use materials for housing and infrastructure projects across western India, where demand for faster and more efficient construction methods continues to rise.

The company, Bigbloc Construction, is entering a segment that includes tile adhesives, wall finishes, ready-mix plaster, block joining mortar and waterproofing products. These materials are increasingly used in modern projects because they can reduce on-site mixing, cut labour time and improve consistency in quality. For rapidly urbanising regions, such products can shorten construction timelines while lowering material wastage. The expansion is significant because India’s real estate and civic infrastructure sectors are under pressure to build faster while meeting stricter environmental expectations. Traditional site practices often rely on manual mixing, higher water use and uneven material application. Factory-produced construction chemicals can help reduce these inefficiencies, particularly in affordable housing, public facilities and mid-scale urban redevelopment schemes.Industry observers say western India remains a strategic market for such products due to continued industrial investment, logistics growth and residential demand. Gujarat’s coastal manufacturing belt also offers supply-chain advantages, allowing companies to serve both state markets and neighbouring urban centres efficiently. A trial run at Umargaon suggests the company is positioning itself to capture this demand before launching full commercial operations.

Bigbloc Construction has so far been better known for autoclaved aerated concrete blocks, lighter walling materials that are commonly promoted for thermal efficiency and faster installation. By adding construction chemicals, the company can now supply complementary materials used alongside block systems, creating a broader product basket for contractors and developers. This matters for cities because fragmented procurement often delays smaller projects. When builders source blocks, adhesives, plaster and waterproofing from multiple vendors, timelines can stretch and costs can rise. Integrated sourcing models may improve predictability, especially for schools, clinics, warehouses and compact housing developments. The company is also pursuing further manufacturing growth, including a proposed large AAC block facility in central India. That suggests confidence in long-term demand linked to urban expansion, warehousing and public infrastructure. However, experts note that scale alone will not determine success. Product quality, contractor training, waste recovery systems and lower-carbon manufacturing processes will shape whether new industrial capacity genuinely supports greener construction.

For Gujarat and surrounding markets, the Umargaon trial production marks more than a factory start-up. It reflects how India’s construction supply chain is evolving from commodity materials toward performance-led systems designed for faster, cleaner and more resilient urban growth.
