Adani Green Battery Push Reshapes Power

Adani Green Energy plans to invest around ₹15,000 crore in FY27 to add more than 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery energy storage capacity, marking one of India’s most ambitious grid-scale storage expansions. The move is significant because battery systems are becoming critical to keeping renewable power reliable as cities, industries and households demand uninterrupted electricity.

The proposed capacity addition will sit above the roughly 3 GWh of installed storage the company expects to achieve shortly after recent commissioning activity. Much of the new build-out is linked to the Khavda renewable energy project in Gujarat, where solar and storage systems are being integrated to provide power during evening peaks when sunlight fades. For Adani Green Energy, the investment reflects a strategic shift in India’s clean-energy market. The first phase of renewable growth focused heavily on adding solar and wind generation capacity. The next phase is increasingly centred on reliability, dispatchability and grid balancing. Battery storage helps bridge the mismatch between daytime solar production and higher evening electricity demand, reducing stress on conventional power plants. This matters directly to urban India. Expanding cities require stable electricity for metro systems, data centres, water treatment plants, hospitals, commercial districts and electric vehicle charging networks. Renewable power without storage can create volatility during peak demand windows. Large battery systems can smooth supply and help utilities manage load more efficiently.

The company’s filings indicate that around 75 per cent of the planned 10+ GWh capacity is backed by long-term fixed-tariff power purchase agreements. That structure can provide revenue certainty for capital-intensive infrastructure while giving distribution companies more predictable pricing over extended periods. India’s battery storage ecosystem, however, remains at an early stage. While policy support and tenders have accelerated, the sector still faces challenges including financing costs, domestic cell manufacturing capacity, recycling systems and transmission readiness. Large projects such as Adani Green Energy’s plan could help create scale and lower costs for future deployments. There is also an environmental dimension. Better storage can reduce reliance on diesel peaker units and inefficient backup generation often used during supply gaps. If paired with cleaner grids, batteries can support lower-emission urban growth while improving air quality in dense population centres. For the wider market, the announcement signals that energy infrastructure is evolving beyond megawatts of generation alone. The quality, timing and flexibility of electricity supply are becoming equally valuable metrics. Companies able to combine generation with storage may gain an advantage as utilities seek dependable clean power.

The next test will be execution speed. Delivering more than 10 GWh in a single financial year would require rapid procurement, integration and commissioning. If achieved, Adani Green Energy could help accelerate India’s transition from intermittent renewables toward a more resilient clean-power system suited to the needs of growing cities and modern industry.
