India paint mixing market shifts toward premium demand

India’s paint and coatings ecosystem is entering a new phase of demand evolution, with paint mixing technologies gaining prominence as renovation cycles and consumer preferences shift toward customised, higher-value finishes. Industry assessments indicate that while overall volumes are expected to grow steadily through the next decade, value growth will increasingly be driven by premium offerings and tailored solutions.

Globally, the paint mixing segment is projected to expand at a moderate pace through 2035, supported by rising renovation activity and a shift towards performance-led and designer finishes. IndexBox notes that value growth is expected to outpace volume as consumers increasingly opt for specialised coatings with enhanced durability, washability, and environmental performance. In India, this trend is closely tied to urbanisation and changing housing patterns. The country’s paints and coatings market, already valued at over ₹1.3 trillion, is projected to grow rapidly on the back of infrastructure expansion, housing demand, and rising disposable incomes. Decorative paints continue to dominate, accounting for a significant share of demand, particularly in residential construction and refurbishment cycles.

The growing relevance of paint mixing technologies reflects a deeper behavioural shift. Urban households are increasingly investing in interior upgrades, colour personalisation, and long-lasting finishes, rather than viewing paint as a purely functional coating. This has led to a gradual move away from standardised products towards customised mixes available at retail outlets and specialty stores. For cities, the implications extend beyond aesthetics. Renovation-led demand—especially in older housing stock—has become a key driver of material consumption.

As Indian cities densify and land availability tightens, refurbishment is emerging as a more resource-efficient alternative to new construction. Experts suggest that this trend could support more sustainable urban growth by extending building lifecycles and reducing demolition-related waste. At the same time, the rise of premium paint mixing solutions is closely linked to environmental considerations. There is a growing shift towards water-based and low-VOC (volatile organic compound) coatings, which reduce indoor air pollution and align with evolving regulatory standards. This transition is expected to influence both product innovation and consumer choice, particularly in urban housing and commercial spaces. However, the sector faces structural challenges. Input cost volatility—especially for key materials like titanium dioxide and resins—continues to impact pricing strategies and margins. Additionally, the increasing concentration of retail distribution in organised channels is reshaping how paint mixing services are delivered, placing greater emphasis on in-store technology, skilled labour, and service quality.

Looking ahead, India’s paint mixing market is likely to evolve alongside broader urban development trends. As cities prioritise both liveability and sustainability, the demand for customised, durable, and low-impact coatings is expected to rise. The challenge for the industry will be to balance this premiumisation with affordability and accessibility, ensuring that the benefits of improved materials reach a wider cross-section of urban and peri-urban households.
