Maharashtra Project Targets Industrial Carbon Reuse

India’s push to decarbonise heavy industry has gained momentum with a proposed green methanol venture that seeks to convert steel sector emissions into cleaner industrial fuel, signalling a wider shift in how manufacturing hubs may address carbon intensive growth.

The initiative centres on a planned facility in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, where carbon dioxide generated through steelmaking operations could be captured and transformed into green methanol using renewable-energy based hydrogen. The project, currently under evaluation through a strategic partnership involving a major steel producer, a technology platform and an international clean-fuels specialist, is expected to explore production capacity of around 300,000 tonnes annually. The development arrives at a critical moment for India’s industrial economy. As cities expand and demand for steel, construction materials and logistics infrastructure continues to rise, policymakers and industry stakeholders face mounting pressure to reduce emissions from sectors that remain difficult to electrify. Steel production alone contributes significantly to industrial carbon output, making carbon capture and utilisation technologies increasingly relevant to future urban and economic planning.

Industry experts note that green methanol is emerging as an important transition fuel for shipping, chemicals, refining and heavy transport. Unlike conventional methanol produced from fossil fuels, green methanol relies on renewable energy and recycled carbon streams, creating opportunities to lower lifecycle emissions while supporting domestic manufacturing. The proposed Green Methanol Project would examine the use of existing high-purity carbon dioxide streams from industrial operations while assessing additional opportunities to capture emissions from broader steel production processes. Such projects are being viewed as test cases for integrating circular carbon systems into large-scale industrial zones rather than treating emissions solely as waste.Urban planners and sustainability researchers argue that industrial decarbonisation is becoming increasingly linked to city resilience. Manufacturing corridors surrounding major urban regions generate employment and economic activity, but they also contribute to air pollution, resource consumption and climate risks. Investments in cleaner fuels and carbon management technologies could therefore influence not only industrial competitiveness but also environmental outcomes for neighbouring communities.

The Green Methanol Project also reflects growing international collaboration around climate-linked infrastructure. Partnerships involving technology providers, financiers and industrial operators are becoming more common as countries seek practical pathways to meet emissions targets without disrupting economic growth. However, analysts caution that commercial viability remains a key challenge. Large scale green hydrogen production, renewable electricity availability and carbon capture costs will determine whether green methanol can compete with conventional fuels. The success of such ventures will depend on supportive policy frameworks, reliable clean-energy supply chains and long-term demand from transport and industrial users.
For India’s rapidly urbanising regions, the outcome may extend beyond a single industrial project. If replicated successfully, green methanol production could create a model for converting industrial emissions into economic value, helping cities and manufacturing centres balance growth ambitions with the demands of a lower carbon future.
