Kansai Nerolac Campaign Draws Focus To Urban Heat Stress

As Indian cities grapple with longer and more intense heatwaves, a recent public demonstration of heat reflective surface coatings has renewed attention on how buildings and public infrastructure can be adapted to reduce heat exposure.

The initiative, conducted across temple premises in southern India, showcased the use of a specialised coating designed to lower surface temperatures on pathways frequently used by barefoot visitors. The exercise highlights a wider urban challenge how cities can protect residents from escalating thermal stress while reducing dependence on energy intensive cooling systems.According to publicly available product information, the coating used in the demonstration is designed to reflect solar radiation and reduce heat absorption, with reported surface temperature reductions of up to 15 degrees Celsius under certain conditions. Similar technologies are increasingly being explored worldwide as part of climate adaptation strategies aimed at reducing urban heat island effects and improving thermal comfort in densely populated environments. The demonstration comes at a time when heat resilience is emerging as a critical planning concern across India. Rising temperatures have intensified pressure on electricity networks, increased cooling demand and heightened health risks for outdoor workers, senior citizens and vulnerable communities.

Urban planners note that public spaces, pavements, transport hubs and building rooftops often become heat traps during peak summer months, creating discomfort and, in some cases, dangerous conditions for citizens.Experts in sustainable construction argue that reflective coatings, commonly known as cool roof technologies, can play a supporting role in broader climate adaptation efforts.Their effectiveness depends on factors such as building design, local climate conditions, maintenance standards and integration with other passive cooling measures.These may include improved ventilation, increased urban tree cover, shaded walkways and climate-responsive architecture.The growing policy interest in such solutions is already visible. Earlier this month, Tamil Nadu introduced a state-level standard operating framework for cool roof coating applications, aimed at reducing surface and indoor temperatures across homes, schools and public buildings. Officials indicated that scientifically validated reflective coatings could lower cooling energy requirements while improving indoor comfort during periods of extreme heat.

While commercial demonstrations often seek to showcase product performance, urban development specialists say the larger significance lies in raising public awareness of heat adaptation measures. As cities continue expanding and concrete surfaces proliferate, investments in heat-resilient infrastructure are becoming increasingly important for public health, productivity and quality of life.Looking ahead, policymakers, builders and civic agencies are expected to place greater emphasis on cooling strategies that reduce environmental impacts while improving everyday urban experiences. The challenge will be scaling proven solutions equitably so that heat resilience benefits extend beyond premium developments to neighbourhoods and public spaces where climate risks are often most severe.
