India Steel Exports Gain Momentum Despite Trade Barriers

India’s steel export trade is showing renewed momentum as producers redirect shipments towards markets outside Europe, where tighter trade rules are reshaping global flows. The rise in rolled steel exports in July comes against a wider shift in India’s steel strategy, with overseas demand becoming more diversified while domestic infrastructure and construction remain the sector’s principal growth anchors.

India’s steel exports have benefited from stronger shipments to several alternative destinations as European restrictions make the traditional market less predictable. Data cited by industry sources show rolled-steel exports increased sharply in July compared with the same month a year earlier. The movement is significant because it suggests Indian mills are adapting rather than relying on a small group of established buyers. The shift follows a strong first half of 2026. India exported 4.63 million tonnes of steel during January-June, up 27% from the corresponding period a year earlier. Shipments to the European Union fell nearly 20% to 1.01 million tonnes, while exports to Vietnam increased substantially to 0.65 million tonnes. The United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates also became more important destinations.

Trade policy is becoming a central factor in that rebalancing. The UK’s trade agreement with India, effective from 15 July, provides duty-free access for more than 1.1 million tonnes of Indian steel annually through a combination of quotas and authorised-use provisions. This creates a potentially more stable channel for exporters even as Britain maintains wider safeguards on steel imports. At home, however, the export opportunity must be viewed alongside a sizeable domestic market. India produced 40.6 million tonnes of finished steel in the first quarter of FY27, 4.9% higher than a year earlier. Yet July prices for 10mm TMT steel were around ₹56,698 a tonne, down 5.6% from May, showing that stronger production does not automatically translate into stronger realisations for producers. For cities, this balance matters. Steel underpins bridges, rail systems, housing, industrial buildings, renewable-energy infrastructure and water networks. Export growth can support manufacturing activity and foreign earnings, but excessive external dependence can also expose domestic construction supply chains to international price swings.

The environmental dimension is equally important. Steelmakers expanding exports face growing pressure to demonstrate lower carbon intensity as markets introduce stricter climate-linked trade rules. Redirecting shipments may protect volumes in the short term, but long-term competitiveness will increasingly depend on cleaner production, reliable emissions data and greater use of renewable electricity and recycled steel. The next phase for steel exports will therefore be less about volume alone and more about market resilience. Diversifying destinations can reduce trade risk, while domestic demand and decarbonisation will determine whether export growth contributes to a more durable and resource-efficient industrial base.
