Jindal Stainless Coin Blank Capacity Expansion Gains Pace

Jindal Stainless is raising its annual coin-blank capacity at its Hisar facility from 10,000 tonnes to 12,000 tonnes, a 20% increase aimed at serving growing orders from Indian and overseas mints. The move also highlights how specialised manufacturing is becoming part of Haryana’s industrial economy, while putting greater attention on water use, energy sourcing and resource efficiency at large industrial sites.

Coin blanks are the unstamped metal pieces that are later processed into currency. The Hisar unit supplies blanks to mints in India and several overseas markets, with specifications varying by denomination and minting requirements. The company has historically maintained a 10,000-tonne annual coin-blanking capacity, making the proposed increase a significant expansion of a specialised manufacturing line. The coin blank capacity expansion comes as physical currency continues to retain a role across different economies, despite the rapid growth of digital payments. For manufacturers, demand is influenced not only by the number of coins required but also by material specifications, durability and procurement requirements set by individual mints. The Hisar facility also reflects the environmental pressures associated with large industrial operations. Haryana’s Hisar region has been identified as water-stressed, making industrial water management particularly relevant. The company reports using zero-liquid-discharge systems and recovering treated water and process materials for reuse.

Its latest sustainability reporting also highlights rainwater harvesting and water-reuse measures at the facility. The wider industrial question is whether capacity growth can remain aligned with lower resource consumption. The company has said it plans to increase the share of green energy used at the Hisar operation to 80% this year, from 70%, alongside projects involving hydrogen and floating solar generation. Such measures could reduce operational exposure to conventional energy, although their wider climate impact will depend on actual energy displacement and lifecycle performance. The expansion is also part of a broader value-added manufacturing strategy at Hisar, where specialised products include precision strips and razor-blade steel. The facility has an installed stainless-steel melting capacity of about 800,000 tonnes a year, underlining its importance within Haryana’s established industrial base.

The expansion has no direct RERA implication, as the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act governs real estate projects rather than industrial manufacturing. Its urban relevance instead lies in how industrial growth affects employment, infrastructure demand, water resources and energy systems around manufacturing centres. For Hisar, the next test will be whether industrial expansion can deliver economic activity while keeping pressure on local water, land and energy resources within sustainable limits.
