India Steel Consumption Signals Wider Urban Growth

India’s steel consumption has nearly doubled over the past decade, reaching about 152 million tonnes in 2024-25 from 77 million tonnes in 2014-15. The latest figures, discussed in New Delhi during the India AI Impact Summit 2026, point to a broader shift in construction, infrastructure and industrial demand as the country prepares for another major capacity expansion.

The increase is closely tied to the scale of India’s urban and infrastructure build-out. Steel is central to bridges, rail networks, metro systems, industrial facilities, warehouses, housing and commercial buildings. As cities expand and new economic corridors develop, sustained steel consumption is likely to remain an important indicator of construction activity and capital investment. Government data shows that finished steel consumption stood at 152.13 million tonnes in 2024-25, up from 136.29 million tonnes a year earlier. The same official data places crude steel capacity at about 200.33 million tonnes in 2024-25, indicating that production capacity is already expanding alongside demand. The next phase could be considerably larger.

The Steel Ministry expects crude steel capacity to reach 300 million tonnes by 2030-31 and potentially 400 million tonnes by 2035-36. The National Steel Policy has also linked the sector’s long-term expansion with rising urbanisation and infrastructure requirements. For cities, however, higher steel consumption is not automatically a sign of better development. The environmental cost of expanding steel production, including energy use and emissions, will become more significant as capacity rises. Infrastructure planners will therefore face growing pressure to balance construction needs with lower-carbon materials, efficient design, recycling and cleaner industrial processes.

The push towards artificial intelligence could also influence how the sector grows. At the New Delhi summit, the Ministry of Steel presented industry challenges to AI developers, with discussions covering potential applications across mining and steel production. Government material says the initiative is intended to improve efficiency, productivity, sustainability and safety across the value chain. The significance of rising steel consumption therefore extends beyond mills and commodity markets. It reflects the physical expansion of India’s economy and cities. The challenge ahead will be ensuring that this growth translates into durable infrastructure and wider economic opportunity without adding avoidable pressure on energy systems, land, air quality and urban resilience.
