Dalmia Cement Shifts Tamil Nadu Freight Electric

Tamil Nadu is seeing a shift in how industrial freight moves, with Dalmia Cement deploying 24 heavy-duty electric trucks on the roughly 140-kilometre corridor linking Karaikal Port with its Dalmiapuram and Ariyalur plants. The move targets diesel use in bulk-material transport while highlighting the infrastructure needed to electrify long-distance industrial logistics.

The trucks will carry petcoke, slag and gypsum, materials that feed cement production. Together, the fleet is expected to cover nearly 2.9 million kilometres a year. Based on an assumed electricity mix containing about 70% renewable power, the operator estimates that the switch could avoid around 3,735 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.  That calculation also shows why electric freight trucks cannot be assessed only by their tailpipe emissions. The climate benefit depends partly on how the electricity used for charging is generated. As industrial freight expands, cleaner vehicles will therefore need to be matched with renewable power, reliable charging networks and efficient route planning.

The operation also introduces a trailer-swapping arrangement. Tractor units and trailers are registered separately, allowing an electric tractor to be connected to another trailer while the first is being loaded or unloaded. This can reduce waiting periods, an important consideration because charging time and vehicle utilisation remain major operational constraints for heavy freight. The technology is being deployed on an established industrial corridor rather than a short urban delivery route. That makes the project relevant to the wider transition towards electric freight trucks, particularly for industries that depend on continuous movement of heavy raw materials between ports, factories and storage facilities. Publicly available information does not yet provide the complete technical specifications of the 24 trucks, including their exact battery capacity, charging configuration and operating range. Reports have linked the deployment to a 55-tonne electric tractor platform, but the companies have not publicly confirmed whether every vehicle in the new fleet uses the same specification.

The broader logistics impact will depend on what happens beyond the initial fleet. Heavy vehicles place substantial demands on roads, charging infrastructure and electricity networks. For industrial corridors, electrification therefore needs to progress alongside dependable power supply, safe freight routes and infrastructure that limits disruption to surrounding communities. The deployment also builds on an earlier electric-mobility programme at Dalmia’s operations. Its latest annual reporting records plans to use high-capacity EVs on routes where two-way freight movement can improve vehicle utilisation.  For Tamil Nadu’s industrial economy, the next test is whether such models can scale beyond individual fleets. The combination of cleaner power, high vehicle utilisation and dedicated charging infrastructure could determine whether heavy freight electrification becomes a practical part of lower-carbon industrial growth.
