Rajasthan Gains New Cement Capacity As JSW Expands

JSW Cement has commissioned an additional 1 MTPA grinding unit at Nagaur, Rajasthan, taking its installed grinding capacity to 25.1 MTPA. The expansion strengthens cement supply across Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and the National Capital Region, as construction and infrastructure investment continue to increase demand for building materials.

The new unit builds on the integrated Nagaur facility that began production in March 2026. That plant initially included 3.3 MTPA of clinker capacity and 2.5 MTPA of grinding capacity. With the latest addition, Nagaur cement capacity has reached 3.5 MTPA, alongside its 3.3 MTPA clinker unit.  The capacity increase is significant for a northern market where cement demand is closely tied to highways, housing, industrial construction and urban expansion. Faster regional production can shorten supply routes and reduce dependence on material transported from distant plants. For growing cities, that can improve supply reliability, although the wider benefits depend on how efficiently new capacity is connected to road and rail networks.

The expansion also adds another layer to the environmental question surrounding cement-led development. Cement remains a carbon-intensive construction material, making energy efficiency and lower-carbon production increasingly important as India’s urban footprint expands. At Nagaur, the manufacturing system includes a waste heat recovery system designed to capture heat generated during production and convert it into usable power. The facility also has provisions for alternative fuel use, while a 7 km overland conveyor transports limestone from the associated mines, reducing the need for some road-based movement of raw material.  A Waste Heat Recovery System, or WHRS, uses otherwise wasted industrial heat to generate electricity. Such systems can reduce the amount of externally sourced power required by cement plants. However, their climate value ultimately depends on overall plant efficiency, fuel mix, clinker intensity and the scale of renewable energy used alongside them.

JSW Cement’s current installed grinding capacity is 25.1 MTPA, with 11 MTPA in the South, 4.5 MTPA in the West, 6.1 MTPA in the East and 2.5 MTPA in the North, according to the company’s latest corporate information. Its clinker capacity stands at 9.74 MTPA. The company has also approved further expansion at Nagaur, including an additional 2.5 MTPA grinding project, indicating that the site is becoming a larger regional manufacturing hub.  For Rajasthan and neighbouring markets, the next test will be whether expanding cement availability translates into more efficient construction without increasing the environmental burden of urbanisation. Better logistics, cleaner power and greater use of lower-carbon cementitious materials will increasingly determine how sustainable that growth becomes.
