BEML Secures Rs 3,658 Crore Contract for Chennai Metro’s Infrastructure Development

The public sector undertaking (PSU) BEML Limited has clinched a substantial contract worth Rs 3,658 crore from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). This contract positions BEML as a key player in the growing urban mobility landscape, as it encompasses the design, manufacturing, supply, and maintenance of crucial metro infrastructure for the city.

The contract will see BEML providing Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs) for Chennai’s metro network, a critical component of the rolling stock. The agreement also includes the supply of depot machinery and plant, alongside a comprehensive package of testing, commissioning, and personnel training. One of the most notable aspects of the deal is the 15-year commitment to maintenance, ensuring the long-term operational efficiency of the equipment and systems involved. BEML, which was formerly known as Bharat Earth Movers Limited, is already a trusted name in the manufacturing of railway rolling stock and other heavy equipment. This new contract adds another feather to its cap, reinforcing its role in advancing the country’s metro and railway infrastructure. The company’s expertise in engineering and its robust manufacturing capabilities are set to enhance the operational performance of Chennai’s metro, contributing to smoother, more efficient urban transit.

The Chennai Metro, one of India’s rapidly expanding metro systems, is poised to benefit greatly from this partnership. With the metro network expected to be a crucial part of Chennai’s public transport infrastructure, BEML’s involvement will ensure that the rolling stock and associated systems are up to the highest standards of quality and performance. This contract is not only a major business win for BEML but also a significant boost to the government’s efforts to modernise public transport in key cities across the country. By strengthening Chennai’s metro infrastructure, this deal represents an important step towards creating a more sustainable, efficient urban transport network, in line with India’s broader vision for smart cities. As the metro system continues to expand, the importance of reliable and advanced rolling stock becomes even more critical. The long-term maintenance agreement also underscores BEML’s commitment to ensuring the durability and reliability of the systems it provides, positioning the company as a strategic partner in the nation’s infrastructure development goals.
