India Aluminium Sector Flags Global Trade Risks

India’s aluminium industry has sought policy intervention from the Union Finance Ministry to address mounting global trade pressures, arguing that rising imports,shifting tariff regimes and uneven international competition could weaken domestic manufacturing.

Industry representatives have urged the government to consider measures that strengthen domestic producers while ensuring India remains competitive in international markets.The recommendations include reviewing import-related policies,rationalising duties on key raw materials and creating a more predictable trade environment to support long-term investments in aluminium production and downstream manufacturing.The India aluminium industry argues that global trade disruptions have intensified following changing tariff structures in major economies and increasing exports from countries with surplus production capacity. Market analysts note that these developments have altered international supply chains, creating pricing pressures that can affect domestic manufacturers even when local demand remains healthy.Aluminium has become a critical material for India’s expanding infrastructure network because of its strength, light weight and corrosion resistance. It is widely used in metro rail systems, transmission lines, electric vehicles, renewable energy projects, buildings and urban transport infrastructure.

As public investment continues to accelerate, ensuring a resilient domestic supply chain is viewed as increasingly important for both economic security and project execution.The concerns raised by the India aluminium industry extend beyond trade policy. Such an approach could strengthen India’s position in global supply chains while supporting lower-carbon industrial production. They note that long-term competitiveness will increasingly depend not only on tariff protection but also on productivity, innovation and resource efficiency.The government’s response is expected to be closely watched by manufacturers, investors and infrastructure developers alike.
