India Steel Demand Tests Infrastructure Expansion

New Delhi: India’s steel consumption has almost doubled over the past decade, reaching 152 million tonnes in 2024-25 from 77 million tonnes in 2014-15, according to the Ministry of Steel. The sharp rise reflects the scale of infrastructure, housing and industrial activity underway across the country, while also raising questions about the environmental cost of the next phase of urban expansion.

The figures were discussed at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, where the steel sector also outlined plans to expand crude steel capacity. The government expects capacity to rise from roughly 200 million tonnes currently to 300 million tonnes by 2030–31 and 400 million tonnes by 2035-36. For India’s cities, steel demand is closely linked to the physical expansion of the built environment. Metro systems, railway networks, bridges, highways, industrial parks, renewable-energy infrastructure and housing all require large quantities of steel. Faster construction can support jobs and improve connectivity, but poorly planned expansion can also increase pressure on land, water, transport systems and surrounding ecosystems. The next challenge is therefore not simply producing more steel. Industry experts and infrastructure planners increasingly point to efficiency, cleaner production and better resource management as critical to sustaining growth. The government’s digital roadmap for the sector places artificial intelligence, predictive analytics and automation across mining, logistics, production and quality management.

AI could help steelmakers reduce energy use, identify equipment failures earlier and improve material efficiency. But technology alone will not determine the environmental footprint of expanding production. Steel remains an energy-intensive industry, making decarbonisation, renewable power and greater use of lower-emission production methods important as capacity grows. The implications also extend to India’s property market. As new infrastructure improves regional connectivity, residential and commercial development can follow. RERA, however, applies primarily to real estate projects and does not regulate steel production; its relevance lies in ensuring that housing growth associated with expanding infrastructure remains transparent, accountable and buyer-focused.

For citizens, the larger issue is whether rising industrial capacity translates into better urban outcomes rather than simply faster construction. Infrastructure investment will need to be matched with resilient public services, efficient mobility, affordable housing and stronger environmental safeguards. India’s steel demand is likely to remain closely tied to its urban and economic transformation. The test ahead will be whether the country can build at the required scale while using fewer resources, cutting emissions and ensuring that growth improves everyday urban life.
