A fresh indirect tax dispute involving Shree Cement has drawn attention to compliance risks in India’s industrial sector after authorities in Jodhpur issued a demand order worth ₹8.31 crore linked to alleged unpaid legacy service tax obligations. The case matters beyond one company, as manufacturers with multi-state operations continue to navigate overlapping tax-era transitions and heightened scrutiny.

The cement producer disclosed that it had received an order from the Commissioner of Central GST and Central Excise, Jodhpur, seeking recovery of ₹8,30,94,582 along with applicable interest and an equivalent penalty. The dispute reportedly relates to alleged non-payment of service tax, a levy that predates the Goods and Services Tax regime introduced in 2017. While the amount is modest relative to the scale of a major national building materials company, the development underlines how historical tax matters remain active years after GST replaced multiple indirect levies. For sectors such as cement, steel and construction materials—where freight, logistics, input services and plant operations create complex tax trails—legacy assessments can continue to surface.Shree Cement has indicated that it disagrees with the findings and intends to challenge the order before the relevant tribunal within the prescribed timeline. The company has also stated that it does not expect a material financial impact from the demand. 

Industry experts say such disputes often hinge on classification of services, eligibility of credits, documentation standards or treatment of inter-unit transactions.
