Mahim Station Reopens ₹4.27 Crore FOB for 20000 Commuters Daily

Mumbai’s Mahim Station has undergone a significant infrastructure upgrade with the reopening of its newly constructed Foot Over Bridge (FOB), designed to enhance the safety and convenience of over 20,000 daily commuters.

The ₹4.27 crore project replaces the old FOB, which was shut down in June 2023 due to severe corrosion, marking a key milestone in Western Railway’s ongoing efforts to modernise urban transport facilities. The upgraded FOB spans 22 metres in length and 6 metres in width, providing a spacious and secure passage for pedestrians. Constructed using IRS 350-grade stainless steel, known for its high corrosion resistance, the structure promises durability and minimal maintenance costs. The stainless steel components, sourced from JSL, were fabricated at an RDSO-approved workshop in Cuttack, Odisha, before being transported to Mumbai for assembly.

An official from Western Railway detailed the construction timeline, with the main girders launched in November 2024, followed by the casting of the deck slab and staircases in March 2025. The project was executed with a focus on structural integrity, safety, and long-term sustainability.Mahim Station serves as a vital transport hub, with thousands of commuters relying on the FOB daily to connect with local buses, auto-rickshaws, and suburban trains. The new bridge is expected to alleviate pedestrian congestion, particularly during peak hours, and enhance the safety of commuters, including school children, office-goers, and senior citizens.

This development aligns with Western Railway’s broader vision of creating sustainable, eco-friendly urban infrastructure. The use of stainless steel not only reduces the need for frequent repairs but also supports the goal of building resilient and environmentally responsible public transport facilities. In addition to Mahim, Western Railway recently completed the reconstruction of the Wankhede North FOB, improving access for cricket fans ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. This project, funded by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), was completed within eight months and features modern amenities such as enhanced lighting and CCTV surveillance for better security.

The Mahim FOB features two staircases, strategically placed on the east and west sides to ensure smooth pedestrian flow. Advanced lighting systems and surveillance cameras have been installed to improve visibility and safety, especially during high-traffic periods and major city events. This project is part of Western Railway’s ongoing commitment to enhancing commuter safety and comfort through timely infrastructure upgrades. The reopening of the Mahim FOB is expected to have a lasting positive impact, not just on daily passengers but also on Mumbai’s broader goal of becoming a more sustainable and resilient urban centre.
