Ashoka Buildcon JV Secures Rs 1041 Crore Mumbai Flyover Project from BMC

Mumbai’s urban transport infrastructure received a significant boost as Ashoka Buildcon Limited, in partnership with Aakshaya Infra Projects Private Limited, secured a Rs. 1,041.44 crore contract from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the construction of a flyover connecting J.J. Bridge and Sitaram Selam Bridge, popularly known as the Y Bridge. The project is expected to enhance connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in one of the city’s most densely populated zones, E Ward.

The joint venture (JV), formed specifically for this project, will see Ashoka Buildcon hold a 51 percent stake while Aakshaya Infra contributes 49 percent. The flyover will traverse the busy junction of J.J. Road and Saboo Siddik Polytechnic Road, a location plagued by daily bottlenecks due to high volumes of commuter and commercial traffic. The construction phase is scheduled over 24 months, excluding the monsoon period, which typically halts major works in Mumbai. Industry observers note that flyovers in Mumbai remain a vital intervention, given the city’s constrained road space and increasing vehicular numbers. “This project aligns with Mumbai’s broader urban mobility strategy and addresses a key congestion point in E Ward,” said an infrastructure analyst. “Strategically positioned flyovers like the Y Bridge connection improve travel times, support commercial activity, and enhance urban safety.”

Ashoka Buildcon’s order book strengthens with this award, reflecting its growing focus on complex urban infrastructure projects. The company confirmed that all regulatory compliance under SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) 2015 has been observed, including a temporary trading window closure for designated persons, and clarified that no related party transactions were involved in securing the contract. BMC officials highlighted the anticipated long-term benefits, noting that the flyover would facilitate smoother traffic flow for both daily commuters and heavy commercial vehicles, a critical improvement in the E Ward area. Once completed, it is expected to improve connectivity not only locally but across adjoining central Mumbai precincts, offering relief to heavily trafficked corridors.

From a sustainability perspective, urban flyover projects, when integrated with smart traffic management systems, can significantly reduce vehicle idling and associated emissions, contributing indirectly to greener city mobility. Experts also emphasise the importance of community engagement and safety monitoring during construction to minimise disruption in the densely inhabited areas surrounding the site. The flyover project signals continued investment in Mumbai’s urban transport framework and illustrates the city’s drive to tackle congestion in core areas, enhancing both commuter experience and economic productivity. As Mumbai expands, such interventions become crucial in supporting inclusive, efficient, and sustainable urban growth.
