NDMC Launches Major Cleanliness Drive Across Key Residential And Commercial Areas

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has launched an extensive cleanliness and dust pollution control campaign across its jurisdiction, targeting both residential colonies and commercial thoroughfares. The initiative, rolled out on December 12, reflects the council’s commitment to elevating urban environmental standards and improving citizen well-being.

NDMC officials said the campaign adopts a multi-department approach, bringing together the Public Health (Sanitation), Horticulture, and Civil Engineering divisions to deliver a coordinated, comprehensive effort. The measures include mechanised street sweeping, removal of silt and debris from side channels, maintenance of green spaces, and essential repairs to civic infrastructure. “A key focus of the operation is to significantly reduce dust-related pollution and enhance the quality of urban spaces for residents and visitors alike,” an NDMC spokesperson said. The council noted that integrating multiple departments ensures greater efficiency and impact, while addressing environmental challenges holistically.

The campaign has prioritised prominent residential colonies, such as Kaka Nagar, West Kidwai Nagar, Jor Bagh, and official quarters along Shahjahan Road. In parallel, commercial and high-footfall areas including Barakhamba Road, KG Marg, Maulana Azad Road, and Connaught Place are receiving targeted attention. These zones, critical for both daily commuting and business activity, were identified based on citizen complaints and environmental monitoring data. Urban development experts emphasise the significance of sustained sanitation drives in dense city centres, noting their role in public health and environmental sustainability. “Coordinated clean-up efforts not only improve hygiene but also reinforce the city’s resilience against dust-related respiratory issues and broader pollution,” said a senior urban planning consultant. The NDMC’s initiative also aligns with Delhi’s broader climate resilience and zero-carbon urban objectives, particularly in reducing particulate matter exposure in heavily trafficked areas.

Officials indicated that this drive is part of a recurring strategy, with plans to maintain and periodically intensify such operations throughout the year. Beyond immediate sanitation improvements, the campaign aims to instil a culture of civic responsibility and community engagement, fostering cleaner streets, safer pedestrian zones, and better-managed public spaces. As the city continues to expand its green and public infrastructure, NDMC’s coordinated cleanliness initiative sets a precedent for integrating sanitation, horticulture, and civil maintenance efforts. Successful execution could also inform similar programs in other Indian cities striving to achieve sustainable urban management.
