Berger Paints Puts Character Ahead of Celebrity Appeal

Berger Paints is taking a different route in India’s crowded paint advertising market, using an original clown character instead of a familiar celebrity for its latest campaign. The move gives the brand a distinctive visual identity while linking paint durability with everyday exposure to heat, dust and rain conditions increasingly relevant to Indian homes and urban environments.

The campaign, Rang Bana Rahe, centres on Khushrangi, a brightly coloured clown who remains visually unchanged as he moves through a difficult day. The character encounters rain, dust and other disruptions but continues towards his performance without losing his composure or colour. Berger has positioned the story around the broader idea of preserving colour under changing conditions. The strategy also marks a shift in how the paint sector can build brand recall. Celebrity endorsements offer immediate recognition, but an owned character can potentially become more closely associated with a company over time. Industry observers say such characters can provide continuity across campaigns while allowing brands to develop a recognisable world around their products. The film’s visual treatment strengthens that approach. Its retro television format, stylised composition and old-fashioned circus setting create a deliberately nostalgic atmosphere. That aesthetic appears designed to connect with audiences who remember neighbourhood circus performances and early television advertising, while also introducing the campaign to younger viewers through digital platforms.

The product connection remains functional. Berger has tied the campaign to protective coating categories, including HomeShield, WeatherCoat Anti Dustt and Easy Clean. Its WeatherCoat range is marketed around resistance to environmental dust and weather exposure, although product performance should ultimately be assessed against stated specifications rather than advertising imagery. That distinction matters as Indian cities face more dust, heat, intense rainfall and pollution. For households, exterior coatings are not only about appearance; maintenance cycles, weather resistance and the durability of building surfaces can influence long-term upkeep costs. Yet advertising claims remain separate from wider questions around building quality, ventilation, heat management and climate resilience.

The campaign has also been released in multiple Indian languages and across television, digital and social platforms, suggesting an attempt to build broad national recognition rather than rely solely on metropolitan advertising. For Berger Paints, the test now is whether Rang Bana Rahe can turn a one-off creative device into durable brand recognition. For consumers, the more useful measure will remain straightforward: whether products promoted through the campaign deliver the protection and longevity claimed under India’s increasingly demanding urban conditions.
