UltraTech Cement Puts Cleaner Freight on Growth Route

UltraTech Cement is set to expand the use of electric heavy-duty trucks across seven states by December 2026, bringing a larger share of its material movement onto lower-emission transport. The shift covers Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Odisha, with implications for freight emissions, fuel use and the environmental footprint of construction supply chains.

The planned EV logistics network will comprise more than 600 trucks carrying about five million metric tonnes of clinker and other materials each year. The company estimates that, once operational, the fleet could cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by more than 117,000 tonnes and replace diesel consumption equivalent to about 39 million litres. The move comes as heavy road freight remains closely tied to diesel consumption. Cement manufacturing itself is emissions-intensive, but transportation adds another layer to the sector’s environmental footprint. Moving towards electric trucks therefore shifts attention beyond factory-level efficiency to the wider supply chain that connects mines, plants and grinding facilities. UltraTech has entered service arrangements with several electric commercial vehicle manufacturers and logistics providers. The company has also been increasing its use of alternative-fuel vehicles, with earlier deployments covering CNG, LNG and electric trucks.

In June, it announced the deployment of 45 electric heavy-duty trucks for clinker movement between Rajasthan and Delhi-NCR, highlighting the growing use of EVs on longer industrial routes. The EV logistics expansion does not directly fall under RERA regulation, which primarily governs real estate projects and buyer protection. However, the connection to urban development is significant: cement and other construction materials form the backbone of housing and infrastructure projects, while their movement affects fuel demand, road traffic and emissions around growing urban regions. For cities, cleaner freight will matter most when it is supported by reliable charging infrastructure, suitable grid capacity and routes designed for heavy commercial vehicles.

Industry experts note that the economics of electric freight will also depend on vehicle utilisation, charging time, battery performance and electricity costs. The wider test, therefore, is not simply how many electric trucks enter service. It is whether industrial freight can become cleaner without creating new infrastructure bottlenecks or shifting environmental pressures elsewhere. As construction activity expands across India’s urban and regional markets, decarbonising material transport could become an increasingly important part of building lower-emission supply chains. The next phase will depend on whether charging networks, power systems and freight planning keep pace with fleet electrification.
