India Steel Sector Gains RERA Linked Construction Push

India’s steel industry is entering a larger capacity cycle as infrastructure building, construction activity and domestic demand continue to support output. Crude steel production reached about 168 million tonnes in 2025-26, while finished steel exports rose sharply. The expansion matters beyond industrial markets: steel availability, prices and supply chains directly affect housing, transport projects and other assets governed by construction and real-estate regulations, including RERA.

Official data shows crude steel production increased by more than 10% during 2025-26. Finished steel exports crossed 6 million tonnes between April 2025 and March 2026, while imports fell substantially. The shift towards higher domestic production and stronger exports points to a steel market that is becoming increasingly integrated with both infrastructure investment and construction demand. The country’s installed steel capacity is now around 220 million tonnes, with the Ministry of Steel targeting 300 million tonnes by 2030-31. That goal is consistent with the National Steel Policy, which also envisages crude steel production of 255 million tonnes by 2030-31.

For cities, the implications are significant. Steel is a core input for residential buildings, bridges, metro systems, roads, logistics facilities and industrial developments. Higher production can improve supply security, but capacity growth alone does not guarantee stable construction costs. Energy prices, raw material availability, freight expenses and global steel prices will continue to influence what developers and public agencies ultimately pay. The real-estate sector is another important demand channel. Under RERA, project timelines, financial disclosures and buyer protections have increased scrutiny of construction progress. A more reliable domestic steel supply can help reduce one potential source of disruption for large projects, although it cannot eliminate delays caused by approvals, financing, land issues or contractor capacity.

The environmental cost of this expansion will also become harder to overlook. Steel remains one of the more carbon-intensive industrial materials, making energy efficiency, cleaner production methods and greater use of low-carbon technologies increasingly important as capacity rises. The Ministry itself identifies decarbonisation as a major challenge for the sector and has outlined measures aimed at reducing emissions. The next phase, therefore, is not simply about producing more steel. For India’s cities and construction markets, the bigger test will be whether additional capacity translates into predictable material supply, resilient infrastructure delivery and lower environmental intensity without placing fresh pressure on land, energy and natural resources.
