A heavy-duty electric truck has entered cement transportation operations in Rajgangpur, Odisha, in a deployment involving Dalmia Cement, Tejas Cargo India and Blue Energy Motors. The move brings electric mobility into one of India’s energy-intensive industrial supply chains, where freight emissions, operating costs and road-based logistics remain important parts of the wider decarbonisation challenge.

The truck will be operated by Tejas Cargo India for Dalmia Cement’s logistics requirements in Rajgangpur. Unlike passenger electric vehicles, heavy commercial trucks face different constraints, including high payloads, long operating cycles, charging requirements and route economics. Their viability therefore depends not only on vehicle technology but also on whether industrial routes can support reliable charging and sufficient utilisation.The development also adds another layer to electric freight Odisha is beginning to see across industrial activity. Dalmia Bharat has previously introduced electric trucks at its Rajgangpur facility to move slag, a major raw material for cement production. Its latest annual reporting also identifies high-capacity electric vehicles for routes where reverse logistics can be integrated, alongside smaller electric vehicles for warehouse deliveries.For cities and industrial regions, the significance extends beyond replacing diesel vehicles. Freight corridors connect manufacturing plants, warehouses, construction sites and urban markets, making their emissions part of the wider environmental footprint of the built environment.

Transport-related emissions can also fall within companies’ Scope 3 accounting, which covers indirect emissions occurring across value chains.However, a single electric truck does not by itself establish a large-scale transition. The environmental benefit depends on factors such as the electricity used for charging, annual kilometres travelled, vehicle utilisation, battery performance and the extent to which diesel kilometres are actually displaced. Publicly available information on this deployment does not yet establish those operational metrics, making longer-term performance data important for assessing its impact.The economics will matter as well. Heavy-duty electric vehicles can reduce dependence on diesel and potentially lower running costs, but upfront vehicle costs, charging infrastructure and route suitability remain key considerations. For logistics operators, predictable utilisation and dependable charging can determine whether the technology moves from pilot deployments to commercially scalable fleets.

For Rajgangpur and other industrial centres, the next test is therefore scale. As electric freight expands, the availability of charging infrastructure, grid capacity, suitable routes and transparent emissions data will determine whether cleaner trucks can become a practical part of resilient industrial logistics rather than isolated deployments.
