Berger Paints Expansion Targets New Urban Markets

Berger Paints is widening its manufacturing and distribution footprint as competition intensifies across India’s decorative paints market. The company is strengthening operations in western and southern cities, expanding its exclusive retail network and adding production capacity in eastern India. The move comes as housing, commercial construction and infrastructure investment create new demand, while aggressive pricing by newer entrants puts pressure on industry margins.

The Berger Paints expansion is centred on markets where the company sees room to deepen its presence, particularly Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Bengaluru. These cities combine large residential markets with commercial development, refurbishment activity and ongoing infrastructure investment. The company also plans to add up to 250 exclusive outlets a year, taking the network towards 2,500 outlets by March 2029. A larger direct retail presence could improve product availability, but it also reflects the increasing importance of distribution as paint companies compete beyond metropolitan markets.

Manufacturing is another major part of the strategy. Berger has ongoing greenfield projects at Panagarh in West Bengal and Khordha in Odisha, alongside capacity expansion at existing facilities. Earlier company disclosures put the Odisha investment at about ₹1,460 crore, while the Panagarh project has been estimated at around ₹500–600 crore. The projects are intended to increase capacity and strengthen supply from the eastern region. The Berger Paints expansion also highlights how the paint industry is becoming increasingly connected to India’s urban growth. Paint demand is influenced not only by new housing but also by repairs, redevelopment, commercial buildings and infrastructure upgrades. Lower per-capita consumption compared with several developed markets leaves room for long-term demand growth, although that does not guarantee stronger margins for manufacturers.

For consumers and the construction sector, intensified competition could mean wider product choice and greater price sensitivity. However, a price-led market can also encourage manufacturers to prioritise volume over durability, efficiency and lower-impact production unless environmental performance becomes a stronger part of procurement decisions. The next phase will therefore be measured not simply by additional factories or outlets, but by how efficiently new capacity serves growing cities. Manufacturing expansion will need to keep pace with demand while addressing energy use, emissions, waste and resource efficiency across the wider built environment.
