India Steel Prices Push Construction Costs Higher

India’s steel market has entered a period of renewed cost pressure, with flat steel prices reaching levels last seen in 2022 as expensive coking coal meets stronger post-monsoon demand. The increase matters beyond steelmakers: construction, infrastructure, vehicles and consumer goods could all face higher input costs, potentially affecting project budgets and the price of built assets.

BigMint data shows hot rolled coil (HRC) at about ₹64,000 a tonne and cold rolled coil (CRC) at around ₹75,000 a tonne. Both products are widely used in construction, automobiles, appliances and engineering. Since the start of August, HRC has gained about ₹6,000 a tonne, while CRC has risen ₹8,500. The immediate pressure is coming from raw materials. Imported coking coal, a key fuel and reducing agent in blast-furnace steelmaking, has risen sharply. BigMint has linked the latest price movement to higher coal and iron ore costs alongside tighter availability and improving demand. Its September assessment also showed domestic steel prices continuing to climb as inventories remained lean.Demand is providing a second layer of support. Government data shows finished steel consumption reached 70.3 million tonnes between April and August 2026, up 7% from the corresponding period a year earlier. Finished steel production rose 3.8% to 68.1 million tonnes during the same period, while India remained a net importer of finished steel by volume.

The distinction between price and demand is important for cities. Steel is embedded in bridges, metro structures, commercial buildings, industrial facilities and housing. When material costs rise, developers and public agencies may face pressure to revise procurement estimates, construction schedules or project contingencies. For large infrastructure programmes, even modest changes in steel costs can affect overall capital requirements. The impact will not be uniform. Projects with long procurement cycles or fixed-price contracts may absorb more of the increase, while new projects could incorporate higher material assumptions. Higher costs can also reach households indirectly through construction prices, vehicle prices and manufactured products.

There is another factor to watch. Rising imports are adding competition to the domestic market. Government figures show finished steel imports increased 29.5% year on year during April-August 2026. This could limit how far domestic producers can raise prices if imported material becomes more competitive. For urban development, the immediate issue is therefore not simply steel prices, but cost resilience. As infrastructure and housing investment expands, project planning will need to account for volatile raw materials while avoiding cost escalation that ultimately weakens affordability or delays essential city-building works. The direction of steel prices in the coming months will remain closely linked to construction demand, raw-material costs and import flows.
