Shree Cement Pushes Cleaner Industrial Logistics

Shree Cement is expanding the use of electric freight vehicles across its operations, signalling a wider shift in how heavy industries are rethinking transport, energy use and supply chains as India pursues lower-carbon growth. The company plans to induct around 100 electric commercial vehicles during the current financial year while also testing battery storage and exploring electrification in mining equipment, a move that could influence logistics practices across industrial regions.

Freight transport remains one of the most fossil fuel-intensive segments linked to construction materials. Cement production itself is energy-intensive, but emissions associated with moving raw materials and finished products add another layer of environmental cost. The adoption of electric commercial vehicles in industrial logistics therefore represents an emerging strategy to reduce diesel dependence while improving operational efficiency. Industry observers note that the economics of battery-powered freight transport are gradually becoming favourable for fixed industrial routes where charging infrastructure can be planned around manufacturing hubs and distribution centres. Lower fuel expenditure, reduced maintenance needs and improved energy efficiency are increasingly shaping investment decisions among large manufacturers. Beyond road transport, the company is also assessing the use of electric mining machinery such as dumpers and dozers. Mining activity linked to cement and construction materials has traditionally relied on diesel-powered equipment, making electrification in this segment an important area for emissions reduction. Experts say the transition, however, will require stronger charging networks, reliable power supply and improvements in battery technology for heavy-duty applications.

The company has simultaneously increased renewable energy use within its operations, with clean energy now forming a larger share of its overall energy mix. Small-scale battery energy storage projects have also been introduced to evaluate how renewable electricity can be integrated more effectively into industrial processes. Such measures are becoming increasingly relevant as industries seek to balance energy security with decarbonisation goals. Logistics reforms are another part of the strategy. The company has reduced average transport distances and increased rail movement of materials, reflecting a broader trend towards multimodal freight systems. Urban planners and transport specialists argue that shifting more industrial cargo from road to rail can ease highway congestion, reduce emissions and improve freight efficiency in rapidly expanding economic corridors.

The developments align with national efforts under infrastructure programmes that promote rail connectivity and integrated logistics planning. For cities and industrial regions facing rising transport emissions, the wider adoption of electric commercial vehicles, renewable energy and rail-based freight systems could become an important component of cleaner industrial growth. The next challenge will be scaling these initiatives in a way that strengthens both economic competitiveness and environmental resilience.
