Ambuja Cements Expands Supply For Gujarat Construction

A new 1.2 million-tonne-per-annum grinding line at Dahej in Gujarat has expanded Ambuja Cements’ production network, taking its consolidated cement capacity to 110.05 MTPA. The brownfield project adds capacity within an existing industrial complex rather than creating a new plant, positioning the company to serve western India’s construction markets while raising broader questions about demand, freight efficiency and the carbon cost of expanding cement supply.

The project matters beyond the cement industry because Gujarat remains a major base for manufacturing, ports, logistics and industrial investment. Construction of industrial facilities, housing, roads and other infrastructure creates a steady requirement for cement. Locating grinding capacity close to established industrial and transport networks can also reduce the distance finished cement travels to customers, potentially improving supply efficiency. The distinction between grinding and clinker production is important. A grinding unit converts clinker and other materials into cement and generally does not carry the same direct process-emission burden as a clinker kiln. However, it still requires electricity, raw materials and transportation. The climate impact therefore depends on the source of power, clinker content, freight patterns and the extent to which lower-carbon materials replace conventional inputs.

The Gujarat cement capacity addition is also part of a much larger expansion programme. Company disclosures indicate that cement capacity stood at 109 MTPA at the end of June 2026, with several new grinding facilities either undergoing trials or scheduled for commissioning. The company has indicated an objective of reaching roughly 119 MTPA during FY27.That expansion is arriving at a time when the industry’s demand outlook is not uniformly strong. Recent quarterly data showed lower year-on-year sales volumes, while higher fuel costs have added pressure to profitability. For producers, therefore, the commercial challenge is not simply adding tonnes but ensuring that new capacity is absorbed efficiently as construction cycles change. For Gujarat, the implications extend to freight, land use and local infrastructure.

More cement availability can support faster construction and reduce supply bottlenecks, but additional industrial throughput can also increase movement of bulk materials and associated emissions. Urban planners and infrastructure specialists increasingly view these supply chains as part of the wider sustainability equation, rather than treating factories and cities as separate systems. The Gujarat cement capacity increase ultimately strengthens the region’s construction-material base, but its longer-term value will depend on how efficiently that capacity is used. Cleaner electricity, lower-clinker cement, rail-based freight and tighter resource management will be critical if future construction growth is to support economic development without locking cities and industrial regions into higher carbon intensity.
