Behr Paint Company Launches Plant Based Eco Friendly Ecomix Paint Line

In a move signalling the next chapter of sustainable innovation in the coatings industry, Behr Paint Company has introduced BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ECOMIX™ Plant-Based Paint & Primer, a new generation of eco-conscious paints combining high durability, low emissions, and renewable ingredients.

The plant-based formulation marks Behr’s latest step towards responsible production and climate-conscious design, at a time when global construction and interiors markets are under growing pressure to decarbonise. The product contains a minimum of 20% plant-derived ingredients, verified through independent laboratory testing in accordance with ASTM D6866 standards.

As the first 100% all-acrylic paint to meet the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) 20% renewable material threshold for interior coatings, BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ECOMIX™ is also UL GREENGUARD GOLD certified assuring low chemical emissions and safer indoor air quality. Experts say certifications like these are increasingly shaping consumer preferences, particularly among sustainability-conscious homebuyers and interior designers.

A senior executive at Behr Paint Company described the launch as “a milestone in balancing environmental responsibility with uncompromised performance.” The paint, available exclusively through The Home Depot, maintains Behr’s established standards of colour quality and surface durability while introducing measurable environmental benefits.he ECOMIX™ line is formulated as a zero-VOC (volatile organic compound) product, meaning it emits minimal harmful gases during and after application. However, Behr advises that sensitive individuals including infants and those with asthma or allergies should minimise exposure for up to 48 hours after painting. The company’s transparent communication on emission timelines aligns with a broader industry trend towards honest labelling and consumer education.

Beyond product development, Behr Paint Company continues to embed sustainability across its operations from sourcing renewable ingredients and using low-impact recycled packaging to improving energy efficiency in manufacturing. A senior executive noted, “We are committed to driving change across the value chain. It’s not just about paint; it’s about rethinking how our products interact with people and the planet.”

Underscoring its social responsibility, Behr has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to donate 2,500 gallons of BEHR PREMIUM PLUS ECOMIX™ paint for over 100 homes across six U.S. affiliates, including the 2025 Carter Work Project in Austin, Texas focused on sustainable and affordable housing. As cities move towards greener building codes and consumers demand healthier interiors, Behr’s plant-based innovation positions it firmly at the intersection of performance, sustainability, and social good a direction that reflects the future of the global paint industry.
