Coal India Target Raised As Thermal Demand Recovers

Coal India’s shares rose sharply on Tuesday after Morgan Stanley upgraded the stock and lifted its target price, reflecting expectations of stronger thermal power demand and firmer coal-market conditions. The move also highlights how electricity demand, fuel availability and coal pricing remain closely linked to India’s infrastructure and industrial growth.

Shares of Coal India opened at ₹422.90 on the BSE, compared with the previous close of ₹414.50, before touching ₹426.75 during morning trade. The stock was up about 3% at its intraday peak. Morgan Stanley raised its rating on the state-owned coal producer to ‘overweight’ and set a target price of ₹480. Its revised view is based on expectations of higher thermal power consumption, lower inventories at power stations and stronger realisations from electronic coal auctions. The brokerage has also increased its earnings-per-share estimate for FY27 by 20%, following changes to its assumptions for production volumes and e-auction premiums. For Coal India, these factors are important because auction prices can materially affect earnings when demand for higher-quality or assured coal supplies rises.

The broader market performance provides additional context. Coal India has gained around 6% so far in 2026, while the Sensex has declined about 12% over the same period. The stock reached a 52-week high of ₹490.90 in April before retreating towards ₹370 in November 2025. A separate brokerage assessment earlier this month also pointed to tighter power-sector inventories as a potential support for auction pricing through FY27. The view rests partly on the time required for thermal power stations to rebuild coal stocks after periods of tighter availability. For investors, however, the near-term picture remains dependent on both market demand and price behaviour. Technical analysts have identified ₹414 as an important support level, with the ₹400–₹405 region viewed as a wider base. Around ₹435, meanwhile, remains a significant resistance area where previous selling pressure has emerged.

The developments also carry implications beyond the stock market. Coal remains a major component of India’s electricity system, making fuel availability relevant to power reliability, industrial activity and the operating costs ultimately faced across the economy. At the same time, continued dependence on thermal generation underlines the need to expand cleaner electricity sources and strengthen grid resilience as demand rises. The next phase will therefore depend on whether stronger power consumption translates into sustained coal demand without creating renewed pressure on inventories, prices or the wider transition towards lower-carbon energy.
