India Commercial Real Estate Careers Gain New Skills

India’s commercial office market is expanding beyond conventional property development and leasing, creating demand for professionals who can manage workplaces, technology, facilities, sustainability and user experience. The shift is being driven partly by Global Capability Centres (GCCs), flexible workspaces and companies seeking higher-quality offices, widening the potential career paths available to graduates.

The scale of the office market provides context for this change. India recorded 82.6 million sq ft of office leasing in 2025, the highest annual level reported by CBRE, while GCCs accounted for about 39% of leasing in the fourth quarter. In the first quarter of 2026, GCC leasing reached 9.1 million sq ft, or 44% of total office absorption. This expansion is also changing what occupiers expect from buildings. Office users are increasingly seeking quality assets, workplace amenities, efficient operations and environmental performance. CBRE reported that 72% of newly completed office space in the first quarter of 2026 was green-certified, while nearly 79% of leasing was concentrated in certified assets. As buildings become more technology-enabled and service-oriented, the workforce supporting them is becoming more diverse. Roles can extend across facilities and operations, workplace services, customer and tenant relations, sustainability, property management, data analysis and real-estate research. Flexible workspace operators are also an important source of office demand, adding another layer of operational and customer-facing requirements.

This is where commercial real estate careers increasingly overlap with disciplines outside conventional property studies. Graduates in engineering, business, architecture, hospitality, management and communications can potentially enter different parts of the workplace ecosystem, depending on their skills and professional training. Hospitality skills have particular relevance in this transition. Managing visitors, coordinating events, delivering services and handling stakeholder relationships are increasingly applicable to corporate workplaces. At the same time, technical capabilities such as data analysis, building systems, digital workplace tools and project management can help professionals work across increasingly complex properties.Education providers are responding through specialised programmes and industry-linked learning in areas such as facilities management, real-estate management, workplace strategy, sustainability and business operations. Internships, live projects and professional certifications can also help bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and workplace requirements.

The growth of commercial real estate careers, however, should be viewed alongside the changing quality and location of employment. India’s office expansion is concentrated heavily in major markets, although Tier-II cities are gaining attention as companies diversify their operating footprints. For students, the emerging opportunity is therefore less about preparing for a single property-sector job and more about building transferable capabilities. As India’s offices become larger, greener and more digitally managed, the people operating these spaces will increasingly influence their efficiency, environmental performance and everyday experience for workers.
