India imported more than 3.2 million tonnes of fertilisers during the first quarter of FY27, while expanding overseas sourcing arrangements to safeguard supplies ahead of the key agricultural seasons. The government has intensified efforts to diversify procurement by strengthening long-term partnerships with producing nations and international suppliers. The move comes as fertiliser markets continue to face periodic volatility driven by geopolitical tensions, freight costs, energy prices and changing export policies in major producing countries.Officials believe that securing supplies well in advance will help ensure adequate stocks for the kharif and upcoming rabi cropping cycles.
